A Snapchat Cameo person was the real person represented by a selfie in a Cameos animation. It was not a Snapchat account type, profile category, celebrity listing, or special contact status.
Snapchat’s original Cameos feature placed a user’s face and hair into short, looping videos that could be sent in Chat. However, Snapchat now says that Cameos in Chat are no longer available. If you are looking for the old Cameos button, its absence is expected rather than a problem with your app.
What did “Cameo person” mean on Snapchat?
The term referred to the person whose selfie powered a Cameo. Snapchat used that selfie to create the user’s likeness inside a short animated scene—for example, a character dancing, reacting, celebrating, or performing another action.
A Cameo person could be:
- One person: the Snapchat account holder appeared in the animation.
- Two people: the account holder and a friend appeared together, provided the friend allowed their Cameos selfie to be used.
In other words, if Snapchat displayed a Cameo featuring your face, you were the Cameo person. The phrase did not identify a separate user account or a special relationship between Snapchat users.

How Snapchat Cameos worked
When Cameos was available, Snapchat asked the user to take a selfie. The system then placed the shape of the user’s face and hair into pre-made looping videos. Snapchat said Cameos did not use facial-recognition software; its description focused on segmenting the shape of the face and hair for placement in the animation.
The original feature was accessed from the Chat sticker bar. A user could choose a Cameo, select a scene, and send the resulting animation to a friend. That old workflow is why many older guides tell users to open a chat and tap a Cameos icon.
Are Snapchat Cameos still available?
No—Cameos in Chat are no longer available. Snapchat’s current support documentation explicitly states this. As a result, instructions that say to find Cameos in the Chat sticker bar are outdated.
This also explains two common searches:
- “Cameos is missing from Chat”: this is expected in the current Snapchat product.
- “Cameos is missing from Settings”: Snapchat’s current selfie-related controls are under My Selfie, not a current Cameos settings page.

Snapchat’s current related system is called My Selfie. It is a centralized collection of selfie images used to power generative-AI and other Snapchat experiences. Snapchat says a previous Cameos selfie may also be used for My Selfie. Depending on the feature and the account, My Selfie may be used for:
- AI Snaps
- Other generative-AI experiences
- Some Snaps generated by friends using the user’s likeness
- Certain Snapchat advertising experiences, depending on settings
My Selfie is not identical to Cameos. Cameos inserted a likeness into pre-made looping videos. My Selfie is used by newer AI-powered experiences that can generate images or other content featuring the user.

How to find My Selfie in Snapchat
- Open Snapchat and tap the gear icon to open Settings.
- Under My Account, tap My Selfie.
Snapchat also provides another entry point:
- From the Camera screen, swipe up to open Memories.
- Open the AI Snaps tab.
- Follow the My Selfie setup instructions.

To remove it, choose Clear Selfie or Delete Selfie. Snapchat currently uses both labels in its support documentation, so the wording you see may depend on the app build or account rollout.
Removing My Selfie is the current control for the newer selfie system. Looking for an old “delete Cameos selfie” menu may lead to outdated instructions.

Some Snapchat help pages show a shorter route:
Settings → My Selfie → Who Can… → Generate with My Selfie → Only Me
These settings control whether eligible friends can generate supported content featuring your likeness. They are separate from the advertising control. Friends can use your likeness only in supported features and when your settings allow it.
How to stop My Selfie appearing in ads
To turn off the documented advertising option, go to:

How to create the current alternative: AI Snaps
AI Snaps are one of the current experiences powered by My Selfie. To try them:
- From the Camera screen, swipe up to open Memories.
- Tap the AI Snaps tab.
- Complete the My Selfie onboarding flow.
- Tap Done.
- Tap Agree & Continue.
- Tap Yes to accept the Terms of Use.
- Tap + New AI Snap.
- Choose an AI Snap pack.
Snapchat says the first pack may take 20–30 minutes to generate. Finished AI Snaps are saved automatically in the AI Snaps tab in Memories. AI Snaps may not be available for every account, and My Selfie must be enabled for it to appear in AI Snaps or generated images.
