A smart TV app is software you use on a television to access a service or feature, such as video, music, games, sports, education, or lifestyle content. You typically find and install apps through the app store or app interface built into the TV’s platform.
What a smart TV app does
An app is the TV-side software that connects you with a particular service or function. For example, a video service may offer an app for a compatible TV; the app is not the service itself. Smart TV apps are not limited to streaming: Samsung lists categories that include entertainment, information, music, gaming, sports, education, and lifestyle on its Samsung TV Apps page.
Where smart TV apps come from
There is no single app store shared by every smart TV. Each platform provides its own app interface and catalog, so availability on one brand or platform does not guarantee availability on another.
- Samsung Smart TV: Samsung’s Apps service lets users discover and access apps directly on the TV.
- Google TV and Android TV: Google TV users can download apps from Google Play and manage them through the TV interface. Google notes that interface tabs and content can vary by country or language; see Google TV Help.
- LG Smart TV: LG users can search for an app, select and install it, then launch it through the TV interface. The steps are outlined in LG’s app download instructions.
How to check whether an app is available for your TV
App availability can depend on the TV’s platform, exact model, software version, and country or region. Check the maker’s app catalog for your location and model before assuming an app will work. Samsung says supported apps and services may vary by country, model, and software version on its TV Apps page. LG provides guidance for checking supported apps by country and TV model in its support information.

How installing an app usually works
The exact labels differ by TV, but the typical process is to open the television’s app area, search or browse for the app, select it, and choose the install or download option. On LG TVs, LG documents this sequence as opening Apps, searching, selecting and installing the app, then launching it. Google TV provides app downloads through Google Play. Some apps or services may require an account or subscription; check the app’s own details for those requirements.
What the term does not guarantee
Calling a television “smart” does not mean every app is available on it, or that the same app works across all TV platforms. The term describes software accessed through a TV platform; the actual catalog and installation options depend on the platform and compatibility details of the particular set.
