It uses radio-link measurements from tags and receiving infrastructure, then makes the resulting location information available to software. RTLS is a system capability, not a single radio technology or consumer device.
What is a real-time location system?
The IEC summary of ISO/IEC 24730-1:2006 defines RTLS as wireless systems able to locate an item in a defined space at a point in time that is real time or close to it. The standard describes position as derived from physical properties of the radio link between a transmitter and receiving infrastructure. IEC’s summary of ISO/IEC 24730-1:2006 also describes an API purpose: enabling software applications to locate assets with RTLS transmitters attached.
The phrase does not promise a particular accuracy, update rate, coverage area, or radio technology. Those depend on the system’s standard and design, the receiving infrastructure, and the environment where it operates.
How does RTLS work?
- Associate a tag with an asset. A transmitter or tag is attached to, carried by, or otherwise associated with the item to be located.
- Receive the tag’s radio signals. Fixed readers or other infrastructure collect signals from the tag within the deployment area.
- Estimate its position. A location engine analyzes radio measurements, such as signal strength, signal arrival time, differences in arrival time, or arrival angle.
- Provide location data to software. Applications can use the location information through RTLS infrastructure and its software interfaces.
These measurements can support different location methods. An ISO/IEC 24730-22:2012 preview lists time of arrival or time-of-flight ranging, received-signal-strength triangulation, time difference of arrival (TDoA), and angle of arrival (AoA) as examples.

Is RTLS the same as RFID?
No. RTLS estimates an item’s location within a defined area using radio measurements; not every system that detects an item is continuously locating it. The ISO/IEC 24730-22:2012 preview distinguishes event-based passage detection and homing-beacon approaches as methods that are “really RFID rather than RTLS.” A checkpoint that registers a tag when it passes a reader can report that event without estimating the item’s changing position between checkpoints.
What technologies and standards can RTLS use?
RTLS refers to a system function, not a specific air interface. The ISO/IEC 24730 series includes standards for radio interfaces and for software access to RTLS infrastructure. These examples illustrate differences in design; they are not a ranking of technologies for every site.

| 2.4 GHz DSSS | The IEC summary of ISO/IEC 24730-2:2006 describes a networked system for controlled areas such as warehouses, campuses, or airports. It specifies approximate location with frequent updates—for example, several times a minute—and accuracy of 3 m or less for that described system. This is not a general RTLS guarantee. | UWB, low-rate mode | ISO/IEC 24730-61:2013 defines one-directional simplex communication between readers and tags, intended for low-data-rate connectivity with very limited battery-consumption requirements. ISO reports this edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2024 and remains current. ISO/IEC 24730-61:2013 |
| UWB, high-rate mode | ISO/IEC 24730-62:2013 describes one-way TDoA blink communication and optional two-way ranging. Its mandatory default operational mode is intended to support interoperability between tags and infrastructure from different manufacturers. IEC record for ISO/IEC 24730-62:2013 |
| Software API | ISO/IEC 24730-1 describes software access to RTLS infrastructure for locating assets with attached transmitters. IEC record for ISO/IEC 24730-1:2014 |
