A public ID is an identifier a particular service uses or makes available to refer to an account, asset, person, or other entity. It is not one universal ID format: a Cloudinary asset ID, an Opensend account ID, and an XML DTD public identifier serve different purposes. The service asking for the value determines what it means.
What does a public ID identify?
The term describes an identifier in a specific system, not a standard shared across websites and software. To interpret one, first find out which service or data system is asking for it, then check what entity the value refers to and where that service uses it.
For example, Cloudinary uses a Public ID to refer to a media asset and build delivery and transformation URLs. Opensend uses its Public ID to specify an account in API requests. Apple’s Foundation API uses XMLDTDNode.publicID for a public identifier associated with an XML DTD node. These are separate, platform-specific meanings.
How public IDs differ across systems
| System | What the ID refers to | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudinary | A digital asset. Cloudinary describes the Public ID as the primary unique identifier for an asset. | Asset references and delivery or transformation URLs. IDs can be randomly assigned or selected through naming settings. Cloudinary documentation |
| Opensend | An account, with a separate Private ID. | API requests that specify the target account. The help page directs account holders to Account → API Keys to find these values. Opensend Help Center |
| Apple Foundation XML API | A public identifier associated with an XML DTD node; Apple’s documentation says the property applies to entities and notations. | The XMLDTDNode.publicID API property. Apple Developer Documentation |
| Privacy and user discovery | A public contact identifier, such as an email address, may be distinct from a private platform identifier. | Systems that match or discover users. Whether the public identifier is linked to private identity or contact information depends on the system’s privacy model. NSF-hosted privacy research |
| Gorilla research platform | A participant-tracking Public ID and a separate, randomly generated Private ID associated with performance data by default. | Different parts of the participant-data workflow. Linking identifying information with study data can involve deliberate unblinding. Gorilla documentation |
| ETSI/3GPP telecommunications | Publicly known user IDs that can represent different social or work roles and preferred ways to be reached. | Technical network and service contexts; the report is not a general consumer definition. ETSI/3GPP technical report |
What is a public ID used for?
Its job depends on the system. An ID may let a service refer to an asset in a URL, tell an API which account a request targets, identify an XML DTD entity or notation, or keep track of a participant in a study. The value identifies or points to something; it does not, by itself, establish what you are allowed to view or change.

For Opensend, the Public ID identifies the account targeted by an API request. Its Private ID has a distinct role in secure-environment access configuration. Follow Opensend’s documentation when locating or using either value.

Is a public ID the same as a private ID?
No single rule applies everywhere, but some systems explicitly distinguish the two. Opensend pairs its account Public ID with a Private ID used for secure-environment access configuration. Gorilla uses participant IDs with separate tracking roles: its Public ID tracks a participant, while a randomly generated Private ID is associated with performance data by default.
Privacy research also distinguishes a public contact identifier, such as an email address, from a private platform identifier. That distinction does not make the public value anonymous: the relationship between identifiers, and whether a system can connect them to a person’s identity or contact data, matters for privacy.

Does “public” mean it is safe to share?
Not necessarily. “Public” is part of a service’s terminology; it does not guarantee that an identifier is harmless to publish, that it conceals identity, or that anyone who has it can access the item it identifies. An ID can be exposed in a URL or used in an API while access to the underlying asset or account remains governed by separate permissions.
- Check whether the value identifies an account, asset, person, participant, or technical object.
- Find out where the service exposes or uses it, such as a profile, API, URL, dataset, or network.
- Check whether it is stable, changeable, descriptive, or randomly assigned; these properties are service-specific.
- Look for a paired private or internal ID and follow the service’s rules for handling it.
- Confirm what authorization controls access to the identified entity.
Never enter a private ID or secret credential into a field asking for a public ID unless the service’s official instructions explicitly say to do so.

Where can you find your public ID?
There is no universal location. For an Opensend account, its help page says to go to Account → API Keys. For other platforms, consult that service’s documentation or support instructions; an ID shown in one service is not interchangeable with the same-named field in another.
