Instead, it waits for one to interact with a large amount of material, then measures the particles or other signals produced by that rare event. Sensors record the signal; software and physics models help researchers infer where the interaction happened, what kind it was, and the neutrino’s likely direction and energy.
How do we detect neutrinos?
Neutrinos have no electric charge and interact only rarely with matter, so most pass through a detector without leaving a trace. Experiments compensate by using a large target mass and observing it for long periods. On the uncommon occasion a neutrino interacts, the event may produce charged particles or other measurable effects.
- A neutrino reaches the target. The target may be water, ice, or a purpose-built assembly of materials. Most neutrinos pass through without interacting.
- An interaction produces a signal. In an optical detector, a neutrino interaction can create a fast charged particle, such as an electron or muon. Other detector designs register different products or effects.
- Sensors record the signal. Depending on the design, sensors may measure light, ionization, or particle tracks. In water and ice detectors, photosensors record light and its arrival times.
- Software reconstructs the event. Researchers analyze the signal’s timing, location, and pattern to estimate properties such as event direction, energy, and topology. These are inferences, not direct readings of the neutrino itself.
- Analysis separates candidates from background. Cosmic rays and other particles can imitate or obscure a neutrino signal. Experiments use their location, shielding, event patterns, and further analysis to identify likely neutrino interactions.
How does a Cherenkov detector work?
In water or ice, light travels more slowly than it does in a vacuum. When a charged particle moves through the medium faster than light can travel through that medium, it emits Cherenkov radiation. The light spreads in a cone around the particle’s path.
Photosensors detect the light and record when it arrives. The pattern and timing help researchers estimate the path and properties of the particle that produced it. In water, for example, a relatively sharp ring can be associated with a muon’s straighter track, while an electron’s shower tends to produce a less sharply defined pattern. This is an interpretation of the interaction’s secondary light, not a photograph of a neutrino.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What do different neutrino detectors measure?
There is no single universal detector. Researchers choose target materials and readout methods to suit an experiment’s scientific goals. Two examples of optical detectors and one historical non-optical design illustrate the range:
| Detector | Target and readout | Design details |
|---|---|---|
| Super-Kamiokande | Ultrapure water watched by photomultiplier tubes, which detect light from interactions. | Neutrino Science’s explainer, updated June 19, 2026, describes a cylindrical detector 40 m across and 40 m tall, containing 50,000 tonnes of water and watched by more than 11,000 large photomultiplier tubes. It is beneath about 1,000 m of rock. These are Super-Kamiokande figures, not general specifications for neutrino detectors. Neutrino Science |
| IceCube | Optical sensors embedded in Antarctic ice detect light from interactions. | NASA’s GCN mission description reports 86 sensor strings extending to about 2,500 m below the glacier surface and instrumenting a cubic kilometer of ice. These figures describe IceCube’s configuration, not all neutrino observatories. NASA GCN |
| OPERA | Lead plates and nuclear-emulsion films formed target bricks; scintillator strips provided tracking, and magnetic spectrometers measured muon momentum and charge. | CERN Open Data documentation describes a historical target of approximately 150,000 bricks with a total mass of 1.25 kilotonnes, arranged in two supermodules. CERN Open Data Portal |
These designs should not be ranked by their headline dimensions or target mass: those figures do not provide a like-for-like measure of scientific performance. Their different materials and signals reflect different experimental designs.

How do researchers know a signal came from a neutrino?
A flash of light or a particle track is not automatically a neutrino detection. Background particles can produce signals inside or near a detector. Experiments reduce this problem through measures such as placing detectors deep underground or beneath ice, then evaluating the event’s timing, location, and pattern. Researchers use calibrated sensors and models of particle interactions and light propagation to reconstruct what most likely happened.
For instance, Super-Kamiokande’s 1998 result was a direction-dependent deficit of atmospheric muon neutrinos, identified through analysis of observations. The experiment’s finding is recognized as the discovery of neutrino oscillation; it was not a direct visual observation of a neutrino changing type. Neutrino Science’s Super-Kamiokande explainer describes the result.

Why are neutrino detectors so large?
Because neutrinos interact so rarely, a small target is unlikely to register many events. A large volume increases the amount of material neutrinos can encounter, while extended observation provides more opportunities to record rare interactions. The depth or other shielding around some detectors also helps reduce signals from cosmic rays and other backgrounds, making potential neutrino events easier to identify.
