A malicious QR code is an image that encodes a link or other content intended to trick you into giving up information, sending money, downloading harmful software, or granting access. The code itself is only a carrier: scanning one does not automatically infect your phone. The risk depends on where it takes you and what you do next.
What makes a QR code malicious?
A QR code becomes malicious when its encoded destination or instructions are used for harmful activity. The most common QR-code version of phishing is called quishing: an attacker hides a deceptive URL in a code and tries to get you to open it. The FBI defines quishing as a phishing technique that embeds malicious URLs in QR codes, sometimes moving a target from a work computer to a mobile device where usual email security controls may not apply. The image alone is not proof of a scam. A legitimate code can link to a menu, event page, or payment service; a malicious one can look identical. Judge it by its source, the destination it opens, and the request that follows.
What can a malicious QR code do?
- Steal account credentials: A link may open a fake sign-in page that imitates a work service, email provider, or VPN portal.
- Divert a payment: A substituted code can send a payment to a criminal-controlled destination rather than the intended recipient.
- Collect personal or financial details: A page may request information under a false pretext.
- Prompt a harmful download: A scam may urge you to install software that can steal information from your phone.
- Abuse account access: Some targeted campaigns have used credential-harvesting pages and may seek session tokens or continued access. The FBI describes these as tactics in specific campaigns, not a necessary part of every QR scam. FBI advisory, January 8, 2026.
The FBI has reported QR codes in targeted emails and examples of campaigns using a fake questionnaire, secure-drive lure, and conference-registration page to lead users toward credential theft. It has also warned about unsolicited packages containing QR codes and criminals placing replacement stickers over legitimate public codes. How to tell whether a QR code may be a scam
No visual check can guarantee that a code is safe, but these warning signs merit caution:
- The code arrives unexpectedly in an email, message, or package, especially from an unknown source.
- A physical code looks like a sticker pasted over another code, or appears altered or damaged.
- The page asks you to sign in, enter payment or personal details, download an app, or grant permissions you did not expect.
- The message creates urgency or asks you to act before you can verify the request.
Before acting, inspect the physical code and consider whether the request makes sense. If a person or organization you know sent an unexpected code, confirm it through a contact method you already trust—not by replying to the message or using details supplied by the QR page. For payments or sign-ins, reach the service through its known app or by typing its established website address yourself.

What to do after scanning a suspicious QR code
- If the page is still open, close it. Do not enter a password, payment information, or other sensitive details, and do not approve an unexpected permission request.
- Verify the request independently. Use the service’s known app, website, or a trusted phone number or contact. Do not treat the QR code or the message carrying it as proof that the request is genuine.
- If you downloaded an app or granted access, review what happened. Remove an app you do not trust and revoke permissions you did not intend to grant. If you entered a password, change it through the service’s official app or website.
- If you suspect fraud, report it. The FBI advises reporting suspected QR-code fraud to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and including relevant details such as the communications, websites, phone numbers, downloaded applications, and permissions involved. Simply scanning a code does not establish that your device was compromised. The important question is whether you followed the link, entered information, installed something, granted access, or completed a payment.
