What a Lightning cable connects
“Lightning cable” usually means a cable with Apple’s Lightning connector on the device end. The other end connects to a USB port and may be USB-A or USB-C. Apple describes its Lightning-to-USB cable as a way to connect a Lightning device to a computer for syncing and charging, or to an Apple USB power adapter for charging. Its USB-C-to-Lightning cable connects a Lightning device to a USB-C port. Apple lists USB-C-to-Lightning cables for charging and syncing supported devices.
The connector at the Lightning end is reversible, so either orientation fits the device port. The USB end must still match the charger or computer port. Apple’s cable and connector guidance covers the Lightning connector and its uses.
What it does: charging and data
Charging
A Lightning cable carries power from a compatible charger to a Lightning-equipped device or accessory. Apple documents USB-C-to-Lightning cables for charging iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, AirPods and AirPods Pro, as well as some accessories. The exact supported use depends on the connected device and cable.

Syncing and importing
With supported hardware, the cable can also connect a Lightning device to a Mac or PC to sync data or import photos. A cable that fits physically does not by itself guarantee every data function: the device, cable and host all need to support the task.
Fast charging is model-dependent
Apple says certain iPhone models can fast-charge with certain USB-C power adapters when connected using a USB-C-to-Lightning cable. It is not a blanket guarantee for every iPhone, adapter or cable. Check Apple’s compatibility details for the specific iPhone and adapter combination at Apple’s USB-C-to-Lightning cable listing.

Which cable do you need?
Match the device end first, then the charger or computer end. A Lightning device can use a USB-A-to-Lightning cable with a USB-A port, or a USB-C-to-Lightning cable with a USB-C port. Apple identifies iPhone 15 and later as USB-C models, so those iPhones do not take a Lightning cable directly. Apple’s connector guide can help identify the port on a device.

If you have a USB-C iPhone or iPad but need to connect a Lightning accessory, Apple documents a USB-C-to-Lightning Adapter for charging, data and audio. Apple specifies up to 480 Mbps (USB 2) for data transfer through that named adapter, and a maximum of 24 W when it charges USB-C iPhone or iPad models. Those figures describe the adapter, not all Lightning cables. Apple says a direct USB-C cable charges a USB-C device faster than using the adapter. Check certification and fit before buying
- Confirm both connector ends: make sure the cable’s Lightning end fits the device and its USB-A or USB-C end fits the charger or computer.
- Check the intended function: confirm the cable supports data if you need syncing or photo imports, not just charging.
- Verify fast-charge compatibility: treat it as a feature for specific iPhone, adapter and cable combinations rather than a universal Lightning-cable capability.
- For third-party Lightning accessories, look for MFi certification: Apple recommends accessories certified by Apple and carrying the MFi badge. Apple warns that counterfeit or uncertified accessories may fail to charge or sync, be easily damaged, fit poorly, overheat or damage a device. - Compare practical details: check the listed length and durability for your use, and confirm the product listing names your exact device and connection. Availability and compatibility can change.
Apple offers a lookup for qualifying MFi-licensed accessories, but a product may be absent if its manufacturer has not opted in or reported it. Apple’s MFi accessory search is a useful check, not a complete guarantee that every absent product is uncertified.
