A large behavior model (LBM) is a model trained on broad behavioral data to predict or produce actions across tasks. In robotics, the term most clearly describes a learned policy trained on demonstrations from multiple tasks—and sometimes multiple kinds of robots. “Large” refers to the breadth of behaviors represented, not to a defined parameter count or a universally agreed model design.

What does “large behavior model” mean?

In robotics, an LBM learns to map what it senses and is asked to do to the actions it should take. Researchers gather demonstrations—often by teleoperating a robot—and train a neural network to reproduce the demonstrated input-output behavior. As Scott Kuindersma describes the approach in an IEEE Robotics and Automation Society interview, the inputs can include camera images, a natural-language task description, and proprioception (information about the robot’s own state); the outputs are commands sent through the robot’s control interface.

The “large” part points to breadth: training across a variety of tasks and, in some cases, robot embodiments. It does not establish a minimum number of parameters, a required volume of training data, or one standard architecture. The term is best understood as a description of intended behavioral scope, rather than a precise technical specification.

How is an LBM different from a language model?

An LBM is not simply another name for a language model. A language model is commonly associated with generating or interpreting text; a robotics LBM is trained to produce actions, such as control commands, from task-relevant inputs. Natural language may be one of those inputs, but the model’s output is behavior rather than necessarily more text.

The distinction depends on the domain. A 2026 retail-customer preprint uses “large behavior model” for a model learning customer decisions from transaction histories. Lirio uses the phrase for a healthcare behavior model intended to support personalized engagement. These are separate applications of a broad label—not evidence of a shared architecture, training method, or evaluation standard across fields.

What makes a behavior model “large”?

There is no shared threshold established by the sources for when a behavior model becomes “large.” In the robotics usage, the emphasis is on a policy trained across many behaviors and possibly different robots, rather than on a particular parameter count. In customer or healthcare applications, the relevant breadth may instead involve decisions or engagement behavior across people and contexts.

  • Domain and output: Does it produce robot actions, model customer decisions, or support health engagement?
  • Training coverage: What tasks, behaviors, records, or demonstrations were included?
  • Embodiments or populations: Which robots, users, or patient groups are represented?
  • Adaptation: How does the system handle a new task or user?
  • Evaluation: Is the claim based on a demonstration, a repeatable real-world test, or evidence of transfer to new tasks?

Does an LBM generalize to new tasks?

Transfer is a goal, not a guaranteed capability. In robotics, training on varied tasks and robots may help a policy apply prior learning to a new task. But Kuindersma cautions that evidence for this is still early: “As a field, we are still in the early days of gathering evidence that this is actually the case.” A successful demonstration therefore should not be treated as proof of broad autonomy or reliable performance across unfamiliar situations.

Reward & Behavior Journal for Kids - Weekly Chart
  • WEEKLY BREAKDOWNS - This Reward chart book includes weekly reward charts, and stickers to last all year ( + extra motivational stickers !!!). 60 task cards are included, so you and your child can customize their book to display the 7 tasks applicable to your lifestyle and needs. The tasks cards can be switched around, so that you can introduce new tasks as needed. It also includes a convenient card storage system to keep the task cards from getting lost!

There is no single cross-domain benchmark established here for comparing all systems called LBMs. A useful comparison needs to identify the domain, training coverage, and evaluation conditions, and to separate a system’s intended generality from demonstrated, repeatable results.

What evidence supports healthcare LBM claims?

Lirio’s 2024 white paper reports several outcome figures for its healthcare behavior model: four times the engagement with healthcare messages; 60% of patients with diabetes completing overdue appointments; more than 600,000 people vaccinated against respiratory illness; and 96.3% of people eligible for three or more recommended actions engaging. These are company-reported figures, not independent evaluations. The document does not provide enough context to treat them as generalizable causal estimates or as performance measures for LBMs as a whole.

Why the term needs context

“Large behavior model” is an emerging, unsettled label used in different domains. A robotics policy, a model of customer decisions, and a healthcare engagement system may all be called an LBM without sharing the same architecture or standards. The useful definition is therefore domain-specific: ask what behavior the model learns, what actions or decisions it outputs, and what evidence shows it works beyond its training examples.
