A digital lollipop is an experimental device that stimulates taste sensations rather than delivering a sugary treat. Researchers have reported taste-like effects using electrical or thermal stimulation, and newer lollipop-shaped prototypes use food-grade chemicals to create controllable taste channels. These are research systems—not proven diet or diabetes treatments, and not established commercial gaming accessories.
What a digital lollipop does—and doesn’t do
A digital lollipop is a gustation interface: hardware intended to evoke taste sensations through stimulation of the tongue. It can add a taste-related signal to an interactive experience, but it does not convert ordinary digital data into a complete meal or reproduce every quality of a food. The foundational 2016 ACM study introduced an experimental instrument using electrical stimulation and reported sour, salty, bitter, and sweet sensations. Later evidence qualifies how consistently some of those sensations—especially sweetness—were perceived.
Taste is only one part of what people experience as flavor. The studies described here investigate taste sensations, not a complete reproduction of a food’s flavor, texture, aroma, or nutritional value.
How the prototypes create taste sensations
Electrical stimulation
The 2016 ACM study reported electrically evoked sour, salty, bitter, and sweet sensations, and compared natural with artificial sourness. It also demonstrated three levels of artificial-sour intensity. A 2025 review describes the prototype’s controller as varying current intensity from 20 μA to 200 μA, frequency from 50 Hz to 1,200 Hz, and polarity. In the review’s account, most participants perceived sourness, saltiness, and bitterness; only a minority reported sweetness when reverse polarity was applied.

Those accounts make an important distinction: the early study reported several taste categories, but the later review describes sweetness as less consistent than sour, salty, or bitter sensations. The reported effects are perceptual findings from experimental work, not evidence that electrical stimulation reliably gives every user the same taste.
Thermal stimulation
The Thermal Taste Machine used temperature changes rather than taste chemicals. In the 2018 IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics study, it heated the tongue from 25°C to 40°C and cooled it from 25°C to 10°C. Rapid heating was reported to produce sweetness, fatty or oily, electric, and warm sensations, and to reduce sensitivity to metallic taste.

This broadens the design options for taste-like interfaces, but a temperature-induced sweetness-like sensation is not the same as reproducing the full flavor of a sugary food. The reported effects describe perception in a laboratory study.
Chemical iontophoresis
A newer approach uses iontophoresis to move food-grade chemicals held in agarose hydrogels. The 2024 PNAS team reported lollipop-shaped interfaces with arrays of 2–9 independently controllable taste generators, wireless control, and adjustable intensity. Unlike the electrical and thermal approaches above, these interfaces use taste-source chemicals, so replenishing those sources is a practical consideration.

Could a digital lollipop work in gaming or virtual reality?
Potentially, as another output channel alongside sight, sound, touch, and smell. A game or immersive simulation could pair a taste stimulus with an on-screen or in-world event. The 2018 thermal-taste work explored multisensory VR, gaming, remote dining, and online shopping. The 2024 PNAS team demonstrated medical gustation assessment, immersive remote shopping, and mixed-reality use cases.
These demonstrations establish research directions, not a plug-and-play gaming peripheral. A usable system must coordinate a safe, repeatable stimulus with software timing and account for individual variation, calibration, hygiene, and—when taste chemicals are used—replenishment. The cited work does not establish a standard setup or universal calibration procedure for consumers.

Could simulated sweetness help with dieting or diabetes?
It is plausible as a research direction: taste simulation could let researchers study sweetness cues with less sugar exposure. But the cited studies do not establish that a digital lollipop reduces sugar intake, controls appetite, causes weight loss, treats diabetes, or improves long-term health. They also do not report long-term safety outcomes that would support those uses.
A 2025 review characterizes electronic taste as an emerging field and notes that optimal electrical and thermal constraints for producing diverse flavors remain unresolved. A taste sensation by itself is not evidence of a dietary or medical benefit. People with diabetes should not use a prototype as a substitute for established care.

Is there a digital lollipop you can buy?
The evidence cited here describes experimental systems and research demonstrations; it does not identify a supported retail product for this exact technology. The compact size reported for the nine-channel PNAS prototype is a research specification, not proof that it is sold to consumers. These findings therefore do not support recommending a particular digital lollipop for home, gaming, diet, or medical use.
