A crypto memory pool, usually called a mempool, is a temporary holding area maintained by a blockchain node for transactions it has accepted but that have not yet been included in a block. A transaction in a mempool is pending, not confirmed—and inclusion is not guaranteed.

What does “crypto memory pool” mean?

“Mempool” is short for “memory pool.” It is also called a pending transaction pool. The NIST Computer Security Resource Center defines a pending transaction pool as “A distributed queue where candidate transactions wait until they are added to the blockchain,” and lists memory pool and mempool as alternative names. NIST CSRC glossary

In practical terms, a mempool is where a node keeps eligible transactions it has received while they await possible inclusion in a block. The pool is temporary and subject to that node’s rules; it is not permanent blockchain storage.

How does a transaction get from a mempool into a block?

  1. A sender submits a transaction. The sender sends it to a node or service.
  2. The receiving node checks it. If the transaction passes that client’s validation and policy checks, the node may keep it in its local mempool and relay it to peers.
  3. Other nodes evaluate it independently. Each node decides what to accept and retain, so their pools can differ.
  4. A block producer selects transactions it knows about. Selection is subject to the blockchain’s rules and the implementation being used.
  5. Inclusion makes it part of a block. Until then, it remains pending for nodes that still retain it.

Bitcoin’s P2P reference describes nodes sharing information about transactions they have verified and have not yet seen in a block. Ethereum’s documentation likewise describes an execution client adding a valid transaction to its local mempool and gossiping it to other nodes; a block proposer may later bundle transactions from its local pool into a payload. Is there one mempool for the whole network?

No. There is no guarantee that every node has the same transactions in its mempool at the same moment. Nodes can receive transactions at different times, apply different policies, or remove entries for their own reasons. In Bitcoin, a request for a peer’s mempool returns transaction hashes known to that particular peer; it does not reveal a single authoritative network-wide queue. BIP 35 Bitcoin Developer Reference

That local, temporary character matters when interpreting a pending status: it describes a node’s current view, not a promise that every node has the transaction or that it will be included.

How Bitcoin and Ethereum use the term

Aspect Bitcoin Ethereum
Local pool Nodes maintain their own pool of unconfirmed transactions. Execution clients maintain a local list of pending transactions.
Protocol or client detail BIP 35 defines a mempool peer message that lets a node request transaction hashes from a peer’s pool. BIP 35 Go-ethereum offers a non-standard txpool API. Its documentation distinguishes pending transactions from queued transactions awaiting future processing; this is specific to that client interface, not a universal rule for every Ethereum client. Go-ethereum txpool documentation
What the pool tells you It shows transactions retained by a particular node, not every transaction submitted or known across the network. It shows the execution client’s local view; transactions may also be sent privately to specialized block builders rather than broadcast publicly. Ethereum.org

Why can a transaction be pending or disappear?

Pending means a node has retained a transaction as a candidate for processing. It does not establish that the transaction has been confirmed, when it will be included, or that all nodes have it. A node may later remove a transaction, and Bitcoin Core stores unconfirmed transactions in non-persistent memory, so entries can disappear when peers restart or when transactions are removed to make room. Bitcoin P2P guide

The exact meaning of labels such as “pending” and “queued,” and the circumstances in which entries are retained, depend on the chain and client. For example, Go-ethereum’s txpool documentation describes pending and queued categories and notes cases where multiple transactions can be associated with the same sender and nonce. Those API details should not be assumed to apply to every Ethereum client. Go-ethereum txpool documentation

Can you see transactions waiting in a mempool?

Yes, through tools such as blockchain explorers, but an explorer is a view onto data available to its node or service—not the mempool itself and not a complete record of every transaction submitted anywhere. The Mempool Open Source Project describes its explorer as a way to inspect real-time and historical information about a node’s mempool. Mempool FAQ

In particular, a public explorer should not be treated as showing privately submitted transactions that were not broadcast to the public network. Ethereum documentation notes that advanced users may forward transactions to specialized block builders instead of broadcasting them publicly. Ethereum.org

Mempool vs. blockchain: the key distinction

  • Mempool: a node’s temporary holding area for candidate transactions not yet included in a block.
  • Blockchain: the chain of blocks that records transactions after inclusion.
  • Pending: a transaction is awaiting possible inclusion according to a node’s current view.
  • Confirmed: a transaction has been included in a block; a pending mempool entry alone is not confirmation.
