A cordless phone system lets you use a mobile handset away from its base. The base connects to telephone service, while the handset and base communicate over radio. The handset is cordless; the system still needs a suitable service connection to place and receive calls.
What is a cordless phone system?
A cordless phone system consists of a base station and one or more mobile handsets. Under the U.S. Federal Communications Commission’s definition, one transceiver is the base station, which connects to the public switched telephone network, and the other is a mobile handset that communicates directly with the base. See 47 CFR § 15.3.
“Cordless” refers to the radio connection between the handset and base, not to a phone that works everywhere without a service connection. The base must connect to the telephone service the system is designed to use.
How does a cordless phone work?
When you make a call, the handset sends your voice and call information by radio to the base. The base connects the call to the telephone service. For an incoming call, the base sends the information over radio to the handset. A system may support several handsets linked to the same base.

How are cordless phones different from DECT and wireless VoIP phones?
DECT cordless phones
DECT, short for Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications, is a digital communications standard commonly used for cordless phone systems. Philips describes it as primarily used in cordless systems for homes and small offices. DECT identifies the radio technology; it does not by itself specify which telephone service the base uses. Philips’ DECT overview
Wireless VoIP phones
A wireless VoIP phone makes calls through a broadband network, using Wi-Fi or DECT to connect to a nearby router or access point. That differs from a conventional cordless phone whose handset radios to a base connected to telephone service. Product designs can overlap, so check the service and network a specific model requires. The Swiss Federal Office of Communications’ DECT information discusses DECT technology.

Quick Recap
Best Value
- Crystal-clear calls on 3 cordless handsets — DECT 6.0 covers the main floor, upstairs, and a third key room without static or interference. DECT 6.0's dedicated 1.9GHz frequency stays completely separate from WiFi routers, microwaves, and other 2.4GHz devices that cause static. Three handsets from one base means a call in any room is always within reach. Up to 7 hours of talk time and 5 days of standby per handset.
- Large buttons and bright backlit displays on all 3 handsets — easy to see and dial even in dim light, designed for anyone who finds standard phone keys too small. Oversize keys spaced wide and clearly labeled. Backlit LCD on each handset displays caller ID name, number, date, and time. Backlit keypad stays illuminated in any lighting. Stores the last 50 caller ID entries for easy callback.
- 14-minute answering machine — check messages from any of the 3 handsets or remotely when away from home. Play messages from any handset without going to the base. Screen calls live and pick up mid-message. Remote access when away from home. Visual message indicator on all handsets.
- Full-duplex speakerphone, intercom between all 3 handsets, and a one-press finder for lost phones. Full-duplex speakerphone — both sides talk freely, no cutting out. Intercom connects any two handsets without a phone line. Call transfer hands off incoming calls to any room. Press the base to make all 3 handsets beep simultaneously.
- Quiet mode, ECO mode, and hearing-aid compatibility across the whole system. Quiet mode silences all 3 handsets and the base at once — one press, instant quiet. ECO mode reduces power when handsets are in range of the base. Hearing-aid compatible (HAC). Plug in, power on — all 3 handsets are pre-registered and ready to use.

What should you check before choosing a system?
- Service connection: Confirm whether the base connects to your telephone line or whether the phone requires VoIP and broadband.
- Handsets: Check how many handsets the base supports and whether any additional handsets you have are compatible with it.
- Coverage: Consider the distance and obstacles between the base and where you plan to use the handset. Published maximums may not match coverage in your building.
- Calling features: Compare the features you need, such as call handling or handset options, against the specific system’s specifications.
