A Copilot+ PC is a qualifying class of Windows 11 computer with an NPU rated above 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS), plus access to a growing set of Windows AI experiences. It is a hardware category—not a separate version of the Copilot app. Not every feature is available on every qualifying computer, and some features need an internet connection or have additional requirements.
What makes a PC a Copilot+ PC?
Microsoft defines Copilot+ PCs as a specialized class of Windows 11 devices with specific system requirements. The key distinction in its current materials is an NPU capable of more than 40 TOPS. An NPU, or neural processing unit, is a processor designed to handle AI workloads efficiently. Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC overview describes the category and its hardware distinction.
Microsoft does not publish one universal processor-brand, memory, and storage checklist that applies to every Copilot+ model. If you are considering a particular computer, check that exact model’s specifications and Microsoft’s current qualification information rather than assuming that any Windows 11 PC with an NPU qualifies.
The Copilot+ PC designation is also different from the Copilot app. Microsoft documents the app separately and says it can be available on new Windows 11 PCs generally; Copilot+ identifies qualifying hardware and the associated experiences. What features do Copilot+ PCs include?
Microsoft associates Copilot+ PCs with AI features that can search, interpret, caption, or modify content. Availability depends on the device, region, language, installed updates, and—in some cases—compatible hardware or a subscription.

Microsoft’s overview notes that Copilot+ experiences are not available on every Windows 11 PC and that availability can vary by device and region. Consult its feature overview and Copilot+ PC device and feature information for current details.
What are the requirements for Recall?
Recall has its own requirements; meeting them does not by itself make a computer a Copilot+ PC. Microsoft Support lists a Copilot+ PC meeting the Secured-core standard, a 40 TOPS NPU, 16 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage, and 50 GB of free space to enable Recall. Microsoft Learn also specifies eight logical processors. These are Recall-specific requirements, not a general Copilot+ PC checklist.

- To enable Recall: at least 50 GB of free storage is required. Microsoft says saving snapshots pauses if available free space falls below 25 GB.
- To protect stored data: Device Encryption or BitLocker must be enabled.
- To control access: Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security must be set up with at least one biometric sign-in option.

Recall periodically saves snapshots when the active screen content changes, organizes them into a timeline, and analyzes them on the device so you can search for text or images. Microsoft says the snapshots and derived context are encrypted and stored on the local drive, and are not shared with Microsoft or third parties. Those are Microsoft’s descriptions of how the feature is designed.
Recall is opt-in: you must consent before snapshots are saved. Microsoft says you can choose which apps and websites are captured, pause or turn off saving, and delete snapshots. Windows Hello with a biometric sign-in option protects access, and Device Encryption or BitLocker must be enabled. On managed devices, Recall is disabled by default; administrators can control whether users may enable it.

Do Copilot+ PC features work offline?
Some experiences run locally, but the Copilot+ label does not mean that every AI feature works without internet access. Microsoft identifies Recall, selected Windows Studio Effects, Live Captions translation, and super resolution as local experiences. Some image creation and editing tools—including Cocreator and certain Paint or Photos features—use cloud services and need an internet connection.
Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC feature overview distinguishes local experiences from cloud-backed ones. Check the requirements for the particular feature you plan to use, since its connection, account, or subscription needs may differ from those of another feature.
Why features differ between Copilot+ PCs
A qualifying PC does not guarantee that every listed experience is available in every place or language. Microsoft says availability varies by device and region, and that some features continue to roll out through updates. Recall and improved search are optimized for English, Simplified Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish; supported content types and storage can also limit what they can do.

Click to Do actions vary by device, region, language, and character set, and some actions require a subscription. Studio Effects depend in part on compatible camera hardware. For translation, Microsoft states support for more than 40 languages into English and 27 into Simplified Chinese; this does not establish translation quality for every language or situation.
How to check a Copilot+ PC before buying or upgrading
Compare the exact model and the specific feature you want to use. A product listing’s Copilot+ label alone may not answer questions about a feature’s rollout, local availability, or additional requirements.
- Confirm the model qualifies. Check the manufacturer’s current specifications and Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC information for the exact model and its NPU capability.
- Check the feature’s system requirements. If you want Recall, compare the computer with Recall’s separate memory, storage, processor, security, and sign-in requirements.
- Check local availability. Verify that the feature is released for your region and language and supported by your installed Windows version and updates.
- Check dependencies. Confirm whether the feature needs an internet connection, subscription, account, or compatible peripheral such as a camera.
- Compare the computer for your broader needs. Assess price, battery life, performance, repairability, and workload fit using evidence for the specific model; the Copilot+ designation alone does not establish how well it will suit your use.
For general AI features, Microsoft’s current pages provide the category and availability details; for Recall, use the feature-specific requirements. Check both before deciding that a particular device will support the experience you want.
