A cloud camera is a network-connected camera or encoder that sends video to a compatible cloud video management or storage service. The camera is the hardware; the cloud service handles functions such as receiving streams, managing devices, storing recordings, and providing authorized live access or notifications. A cloud subscription does not make every camera compatible with every service.

What is a cloud camera?

Think of it as one part of a video system: the camera captures video, its network connection carries the stream, and a cloud video management or VSaaS client receives it. The service may then store recordings, manage devices, and make live video or event notifications available through an authorized app or web client.

The basic path is camera or encoder → network link → cloud client and storage → authorized app or web client. The hardware and service are distinct. The camera’s capabilities depend on its model; storage, device management, remote access, and notifications depend on the cloud provider and its terms.

Do cloud cameras need a local recorder?

Not necessarily. A cloud service can receive and store video without a separate on-site recorder, provided the camera and service support that arrangement. But local recording can also coexist with cloud service: TP-Link’s UK TC47 product listing specifies a microSD card slot and describes Tapo Care as an optional cloud-storage subscription.

That is one model example, not a feature common to every cloud camera. Before choosing a camera, check whether it supports cloud recording, local card recording, or both; confirm supported card capacity in the exact model’s specifications; and review the provider’s cloud-storage terms. Do not assume that cloud recording is included or free.

Can a cloud camera also record to an SD card?

Yes, if the particular camera has a compatible card slot and supports local recording. The TC47 listing is one example of a camera that offers a microSD slot alongside an optional cloud-storage service. Other models may offer only cloud recording, only local recording, or different combinations. Verify the card type and capacity limits in the model’s documentation.

Does a cloud camera need Ethernet or Wi-Fi?

It needs a supported network connection, but the available connection type varies by model. Some cameras connect over Wi-Fi; others may offer Ethernet, and some may offer both. For example, TP-Link lists Ethernet for its TC47. That listing does not establish that the TC47 supports Power over Ethernet (PoE), so check the product’s manual for power requirements rather than inferring PoE from an Ethernet port.

Also verify the installation details for the exact camera: supported power source, mounting method, indoor or outdoor rating, and whether the network reaches the installation location. These are model-specific specifications, not universal properties of cloud cameras.

Are ONVIF cameras compatible with cloud services?

Not automatically. Compatibility depends on the particular camera and the particular cloud video service. Check the service’s supported-device list or ask its provider whether the exact model works, and determine whether the connection is standards-based or proprietary.

ONVIF’s Profile V description sets out a cloud-video approach in which a conformant IP camera, encoder, or streaming application makes a secure outbound connection to a conformant cloud client. ONVIF says this typically avoids configuring port forwarding or a VPN to reach a device behind a local firewall. Once connected, the client can configure the device, and the device can send live video or audio where supported, notifications, and encrypted recordings. Authorized users can access live streams through supported clients.

There is an important status qualification: ONVIF’s FAQ identifies Profile V as a Release Candidate in the material consulted. The FAQ says products can be certified as conformant only after the profile is finalized and conformance testing is available. Do not treat the draft alone as proof that a product is Profile V certified. Existing commercial products may instead use proprietary connections.

What should you check before choosing cloud-camera hardware?

  • Cloud-service compatibility: Confirm support for the exact VMS or VSaaS you plan to use, and whether support relies on a standard or a vendor-specific connection.
  • Network connection: Check whether the model offers Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or both, and plan for its actual power requirements. An Ethernet port alone does not prove PoE support.
  • Recording options: Check whether the camera supports cloud recording, a local microSD card, or both. Verify card capacity limits and cloud-service terms.
  • Security and access: Review authentication, encryption, user permissions, and how video and recordings are handled. ONVIF Profile V’s security add-on addresses authorization and encryption, but ONVIF conformance is not a guarantee of complete security or legal compliance.
  • Installation fit: Use the selected model’s manual or datasheet to confirm power, mounting, environmental rating, and network reach.

What ONVIF conformance does—and does not—tell you

ONVIF describes interoperability standards for network video products. Its cloud-video profile outlines communication and security workflows, but a standard does not guarantee compatibility with every proprietary cloud platform. Nor does conformance establish that a camera meets every legal or regulatory requirement: ONVIF explicitly says regulatory compliance is outside its scope. See its FAQ for that boundary.
