A Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) is a cybersecurity professional credential issued by EC-Council. It recognizes knowledge of how attackers find weaknesses in computer systems and how to assess those systems lawfully, with the owner’s permission, to help improve security. The authorization requirement is essential: a CEH credential does not grant permission to test systems.
What does a Certified Ethical Hacker do?
EC-Council’s CEH Candidate Handbook defines a Certified Ethical Hacker as “a skilled professional who understands and knows how to look for weaknesses and vulnerabilities in target systems and uses the same knowledge and tools as a malicious hacker but in a lawful and legitimate manner to assess the security posture of a target system(s).”
In practice, ethical hacking means examining systems for vulnerabilities so they can be addressed before an attacker exploits them. The handbook defines ethical hacking as testing one’s own computers, or computers for which the tester has official permission, to identify vulnerabilities and take preventive, corrective, and protective measures. Read the CEH Candidate Handbook v4.0.
That permission boundary applies whether or not someone holds CEH: test only systems you own or are explicitly authorized to assess. The credential itself is not legal authorization to conduct a security test.

What does the CEH program cover?
EC-Council currently presents CEH v13 as covering 20 learning modules, 221 hands-on labs, and 550 attack techniques. These are issuer-reported program details, not independent measures of training quality, job readiness, or employment outcomes. EC-Council describes the program as teaching attacker methods from a defensive and ethical perspective. See the Certified Ethical Hacker program page.
For a prospective student, the module count and advertised labs are starting points, not a substitute for checking the current exam blueprint, the actual hands-on work included, and whether the course format suits your needs.
How do the CEH exams differ?
The knowledge exam is the exam associated with the CEH credential. EC-Council describes it as a four-hour exam with 125 multiple-choice questions. The practical exam is a separate, additional pathway associated with the CEH Master designation; EC-Council describes it as six hours long and containing 20 challenges. The practical exam should not be confused with the knowledge exam or treated as a requirement for the underlying CEH credential. Details are on EC-Council’s About the CEH Exam page.
Who is eligible to take the CEH exam?
EC-Council describes two eligibility routes:
Complete official training
Applicants who complete official training through EC-Council’s online program, an Authorized Training Center, or an official academic partner can use the training route. Confirm that the provider and course are currently authorized for the relevant program before enrolling.

Apply using information-security experience
Applicants who do not take official training may apply based on prior experience. EC-Council’s requirements page specifies at least two years of information-security experience for this route; applicants must provide evidence and receive approval. See the CEH certification requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you decide whether CEH is right for you?
Compare the route to eligibility, exam expectations, hands-on practice, and provider details before committing. The right choice depends on your preparation and circumstances; the available program information does not establish a universal best option.
- Eligibility: Determine whether you will qualify through official training or need to submit an experience-based application.
- Exam preparation: Check that your study plan aligns with the current exam blueprint and distinguishes knowledge-exam preparation from the optional practical pathway.
- Hands-on work: Look beyond advertised lab totals to understand what exercises you will actually complete and what practice environment is provided.
- Cost and delivery: Compare current prices, schedule, delivery format, and local availability directly with the provider; these vary and are not established here.
- Provider authorization: Verify that a training provider is an EC-Council Authorized Training Center or official academic partner if you plan to use training for eligibility.
EC-Council lists a CEH v13 ebook with labs, but a study resource should not be assumed to satisfy official-training eligibility or replace checking the current exam blueprint. Its product listing is at CEH v13 ebook with labs.
