A boo basket is a Halloween-themed container filled with treats or small gifts. In the traditional “You’ve Been Booed” neighborhood game, someone leaves one anonymously with a note explaining the activity, and the recipient may pass the fun along by making a basket for another neighbor. Today, the term also means a personal Halloween gift for a child, friend, partner, or family member; that kind of gift does not have to be anonymous or passed on.
What does “boo basket” mean?
The phrase has two overlapping meanings. A traditional boo basket is part of a neighborhood Halloween chain: one household leaves a goody bag or basket for another, usually with a note explaining the game. The recipient can then leave one for someone else. Where did boo baskets come from?
The exact origin is unclear. NBC Los Angeles reports no definitive inventor or specific date for the tradition. Its explainer distinguishes the longer-running “You’ve Been Booed” neighborhood game from the broader boo-basket concept that social media helped popularize. There is not enough established information to name a single birthplace or claim a precise invention year.
When should you give a boo basket?
There is no official date. For a neighborhood chain, early to mid-October is a practical time: it gives recipients an opportunity to continue the activity before Halloween. A personal boo basket can be given whenever it suits the giver and recipient.

What is good boo-basket etiquette?
- Explain the chain. If you want the recipient to continue the neighborhood game, include a short note that says what it is and what they can do next.
- Make anonymity a choice. Leave the basket anonymously if that is part of the game you intend to play; sign or hand over a personal gift if you prefer.
- Consider food needs. Choose treats with the recipient and household in mind. Hallmark advises letting parents know if a basket for children contains homemade or unpackaged snack mix, so they can decide whether it is suitable.
- Keep the gesture manageable. Participation is optional, and a few thoughtful items can be enough. There is no standard basket size or spending requirement.
