Force 4x MSAA is a graphics setting that enables multisample anti-aliasing in OpenGL ES 2.0 apps. It can smooth some jagged polygon edges, but it is not a general phone-speed setting and does not guarantee better graphics or performance in every game.
What Force 4x MSAA does
Android describes the option as: “Force 4x MSAA: Enables multisample anti-aliasing (MSAA) in Open GL ES 2.0 apps.” It appears among hardware-accelerated rendering options in Developer options. The documented scope matters: Android does not say that the toggle applies to every app or graphics API. Android’s Developer options documentation
MSAA is an anti-aliasing technique. It takes multiple samples at locations within a pixel and resolves them into one color for display. This can make hard polygon edges appear less jagged, particularly along silhouettes and where polygons meet. “4x” describes the multisample setting; it does not mean the entire image is rendered at four times your screen’s resolution. Khronos OpenGL ES 3.2 Specification
What you may notice in a game
If a game uses the relevant OpenGL ES 2.0 rendering path and responds to the setting, some polygon edges may look smoother with Force 4x MSAA on. The effect is not guaranteed: the app’s graphics implementation and device support affect whether the setting changes anything. MSAA targets edge aliasing; it is not a general enhancement for textures, interface elements, or every visual artifact.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
Android’s documentation does not provide an app-by-app compatibility list, so a game’s name alone is not enough to establish whether it will respond. Apps outside the documented OpenGL ES 2.0 scope should not be assumed to use the setting.
Does it improve FPS or affect battery and heat?
There is no universal FPS, battery-use, or temperature result established for this toggle. Android’s documentation explains what the setting enables, and the Khronos specification explains how multisampling works; neither provides a benchmark showing that it makes games faster or quantifying its power or heat cost. The result can vary by device and app, so claims of a fixed performance benefit or penalty are not supported by those sources.

How to decide whether to leave it on
Compare the same game on your own device rather than assuming the setting will help. If you test it, keep the game and its graphics settings consistent, then check whether edge quality, frame-rate smoothness, battery use, or device temperature changes. Treat those as observations for that app and workload, not as results that will apply to other games or phones.
To change it, open Settings > Developer options and switch Force 4x MSAA on or off. The exact location or wording can vary by Android version and device maker. If Developer options is not visible, consult your device maker’s instructions for enabling it; Android’s documentation covers configuring on-device developer options.
