The name describes the link rate—not a particular connector, cable, or transceiver. The physical medium depends on the PHY (physical-layer specification) used by the equipment at each end.
What does 25GbE mean?
25GbE means Ethernet operation at a nominal rate of 25 Gb/s. IEEE 802.3by-2016 added specifications for 25 Gb/s PHYs over several media. The amendment was published on 29 July 2016 and is identified by IEEE as a superseded standard; it is a historical amendment to IEEE Std 802.3-2015, not the current complete edition of IEEE 802.3. IEEE’s 802.3by-2016 record describes the amendment, and the IEEE 802.3by task-force page gives the IEEE-SA Standards Board approval date as 30 June 2016.
Because 25GbE is a rate rather than a single physical interface, two devices do not become compatible simply because both are described as “25GbE.” Their supported PHYs and the medium between them must match.
Which physical media can carry a 25GbE link?
IEEE 802.3by-2016 lists three PHY families for 25 Gb/s operation. The names indicate different physical implementations, not interchangeable cable choices.

| PHY family | Medium identified by IEEE | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 25GBASE-CR and 25GBASE-CR-S | Twinaxial copper cabling | Confirm that both devices support the relevant PHY and that the cable assembly is compatible with them. |
| 25GBASE-KR and 25GBASE-KR-S | Electrical backplanes | This is a backplane PHY category, not a general-purpose external patch cable. |
| 25GBASE-SR | Multimode fiber | Check endpoint support, fiber grade, connector, and optical module compatibility. |
The PHY list and media descriptions come from the IEEE 802.3by-2016 record. The standard identifies PHY categories; it does not certify particular switches, network cards, cables, or transceivers.
What is 25GBASE-SR?
25GBASE-SR is a short-reach 25GbE option for multimode fiber. The Fiber Optics Tech Consortium’s overview describes serial transmission at 850 nm over two multimode fibers, using SFP28 modules and LC connectors. Its 25GBASE-SR overview identifies the components; its reach figures vary with the fiber grade:
Rank #2
- Two 25GbE ports support high-performance storage applications
- Enables higher simultaneous throughput, port failover, and load balancing
- Purpose-built for use with Synology systems
- 5-year warranty
- For hardware compatibility information, please see our compatibility list. Requires DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 5 or above.
| Multimode fiber grade | Listed 25GBASE-SR reach |
|---|---|
| OM3 | 70 m |
| OM4 | 100 m |
| OM5 | 100 m |
These figures are the ranges listed for 25GBASE-SR in the consortium’s overview, not a universal guarantee for every installation. Verify the cable grade and the requirements of the specific endpoints and optical components before planning a link.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you choose compatible 25GbE equipment?
- Check the endpoint specifications. Confirm that the switch or network interface card supports 25GbE and the specific PHY you intend to use.
- Match the medium to the PHY. Determine whether the link uses twinaxial copper, an electrical backplane, or multimode fiber; these are different implementations.
- Verify the components at both ends. For 25GBASE-SR, check the module, LC connector, and fiber grade. For a twinax link, check the cable assembly. Consult the device manufacturer’s compatibility information rather than assuming that a component works in every 25GbE port.
- Check the installation conditions. For 25GBASE-SR, compare the planned distance and fiber grade with the stated reach, then confirm the equipment and cabling requirements for the actual installation.
The cited standard and technical overview establish the PHY families and an SR component category, but do not validate compatibility for any named product. A product label alone is not enough to confirm a working link.

- PCI Express 3.1 :5GT/s Support for x1 width (Lane). The original I225-v has been discontinued, and the new generation I226-v will replace it. The two models have identical functionality. Compared to the I225, the I226 has improved error rates, offering better data packet stability over longer cable lengths and providing a more stable network connection. It also enhances the accuracy and stability of data transmission. In the end, the new generation I226 reduced active power consumption, making it more energy-efficient
