What does iPhone inactivity reboot do? Apple calls the built-in iOS security feature Automatic Restart. If an iPhone remains locked for a prolonged period, it restarts and returns to a more restricted security state, making some forms of physical or forensic access harder. It is an added barrier—not a guarantee that every attack or access to data is prevented.
What happens when an iPhone inactivity reboot occurs?
Automatic Restart is available in iOS 18.1 and later. Apple says the Secure Enclave monitors device unlock events and, after a prolonged period without an unlock, restarts the iPhone. Apple describes the trigger as a “prolonged period”; its cited security-guide passage does not specify an exact number of hours. Apple’s platform security guide explains the mechanism.
The restart changes the phone from After First Unlock (AFU) to Before First Unlock (BFU). AFU means the device has been unlocked at least once since its last boot. BFU means it has restarted and has not yet been unlocked with its passcode. Apple states: “During the restart, the device purges sensitive security keys and transient data from memory.”
How long is the inactivity period?
The often-cited interval of 72 hours—three days—comes from a February 20, 2025 notice by the Virginia Department of Forensic Science. It says an applicable, powered-on iPhone reboots 72 hours after it was last locked. That is the interval reported by Virginia DFS, not a duration Apple specifies in the cited security-guide passage. How does the restart protect your data?
Some methods of physical or forensic access can benefit from the phone having been unlocked since its last boot. Returning the device to BFU and purging sensitive keys and transient memory data raises a barrier to methods that rely on the AFU state. The feature does not make all information inaccessible, nor does it prevent every kind of attack.
Why did my iPhone restart by itself?
If your iPhone had remained locked for a prolonged period, Automatic Restart may be the reason it restarted. Afterward, it is in BFU until you enter its passcode. The reboot is a security behavior, not evidence by itself that someone accessed the phone.

Can I turn off iPhone inactivity reboot?
Virginia DFS says the feature cannot be disabled through the device user interface. Apple documents an administrator management setting called Idle reboot allowed, rather than a consumer switch in Settings. Apple’s security guide says administrators can control Automatic Restart on iOS 18.4 and later, and that it is off by default on supervised devices. Apple’s device-management settings reference lists the setting and supported versions.
What should organizations know about managed iPhones?
Apple cautions that a restart can interrupt Wi-Fi and affect device-management operations that depend on persistent connectivity. This is a possible operational issue, not a claim that every reboot will cause a connectivity problem. Administrators of managed deployments should account for it where uninterrupted network access is important.
