The practical changes depend on the enrollment path, your organization’s settings, and which policies it assigns. A work account appearing in Windows does not, by itself, tell you how much control IT has over the device.
First, distinguish account access from device management
Connecting a work or school account, registering a device with Microsoft Entra ID, and joining a device that is managed through Intune are different arrangements. Microsoft’s Windows device enrollment guide describes an email-address route that registers a personal device but leaves it unmanaged by Intune, and a “Join this device to Azure Active Directory” route that joins it and makes it fully managed. Microsoft Entra ID is the current name; some Windows screens and documentation still use the older Azure Active Directory wording.
| What you do | What it can mean | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Connect a work or school account to access work resources | The account connection may provide access to work apps, email, or network resources without making the PC fully managed. | The exact result depends on the connection and your organization’s configuration. |
| Register a personal device with Microsoft Entra ID | The device can be associated with your work account while remaining unmanaged by Intune. | Registration is not the same as joining and full device management. |
| Join the device and enroll it for management | Intune can manage the device and apply organizational policies assigned to it, regardless of who signs in. | Available controls and actual changes depend on assigned policies and enrollment settings. |
Microsoft also documents a Windows MDM enrollment route through Windows Settings and a work or school account connection. That route can allow an organization to enforce policies. Do not assume every account connection follows the same path or leads to the same management scope.
What IT can change on a managed PC
Intune can deliver settings and restrictions to an enrolled device, but the existence of a setting in Intune does not mean your organization uses it. Administrators choose profiles and assign them to users or devices. In Microsoft’s Windows device restriction settings reference, settings left “Not configured” are not changed by that profile.

Depending on the policies assigned, management can affect device configuration, access to work resources, apps, or security settings. The organization controls which profiles apply. For enrollment eligibility, administrators can also use enrollment restrictions to block personally owned Windows devices from some methods, including Add Work Account in Settings, MDM-only enrollment, Company Portal, or a flow started from a Microsoft 365 app. These are tenant-level choices, not universal rules.
What your organization can see
Microsoft’s Intune user-help page says: “Your organization can’t see your personal information when you enroll a device in Microsoft Intune.” Read that as a statement about personal information, not as a promise that IT can see nothing about the device. Enrollment can give the organization management capability over the device, its work data, or both, depending on the enrollment type and configuration. Microsoft’s device-privacy explanation does not establish one complete inventory of every Windows-specific field visible in every configuration.

If you need a precise answer about information visible to your employer, ask IT for the current data inventory and which enrollment type and policies they use. Avoid assuming either that enrollment exposes personal files or that it makes all device information invisible to administrators.
Can work data be protected without full device management?
Sometimes. Microsoft’s Windows MAM documentation describes protecting organizational data in supported applications on a personal Windows device without fully managing the device. This is a separate configuration, not an automatic feature of every work account connection. Availability depends on supported Windows releases and the organization’s deployment, so ask IT whether it is offered.

What happens if you remove the device from Intune?
Unenrolling may end access to work resources and remove or stop management-delivered software and settings. Microsoft says Intune-delivered settings may no longer be required, Company Portal app installation can end, Intune client software and Endpoint Protection may be removed, and automatic updates provided through Intune may stop. Other updates can continue through Windows Update, Microsoft Update, or WSUS depending on how the device is configured. Work apps, email, Wi-Fi, VPN, and other access may also be affected.
Before disconnecting a PC you still use for work, ask your organization what access or software will be removed and whether you need to save or transfer work data. Microsoft’s Windows unenrollment guidance explains the possible effects; the exact outcome depends on your organization’s setup.

Check your Windows version and enrollment route
Microsoft’s Windows enrollment instructions describe the available steps, but the screens can vary with the organization’s enrollment configuration. Its Windows enrollment guide notes that Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. The page says Windows 10 remains an allowed Intune version, but functionality is not guaranteed and can vary. Confirm current support requirements with Microsoft and your organization before enrolling an older PC.
