What did InProComm mean by “non-PC apps”?
“Non-PC apps” was a market direction, not a separate wireless standard or a single product. InProComm was extending its WLAN work toward portable devices and other consumer products that could use wireless networking, rather than concentrating only on traditional PC chipsets. Contemporary coverage described Taiwanese startups supplying WLAN baseband/MAC silicon as the market broadened into consumer and communications products: EE Times.
The phrase reflects the post-PC expansion of Wi-Fi hardware: the same broad category of wireless networking technology could serve computer peripherals as well as other connected devices. The available company history establishes that InProComm began with IEEE 802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11a/g wireless-LAN chips and then branched into portable devices.

Why did MediaTek acquire InProComm?
InProComm was a short-lived Taiwanese wireless-semiconductor design company, founded in 2002 and based in Hsinchu. It merged into MediaTek in early 2005, after which InProComm ceased to exist as an independent company. The merger placed its WLAN design capability within a larger semiconductor business; the available sources establish the acquisition and timing, but do not provide a reliable, directly attributable purchase price or a detailed explanation of MediaTek’s internal rationale.
The business operated in a price-sensitive WLAN market. InProComm marketing manager Craig Conkling described the hunt for affordable radio-frequency components this way: “We’re looking at low-cost RF vendors that can hit the dirty low target,” adding, “It’s amazing; 50 cents can make all the difference in the world.” The remarks illustrate how small component-cost differences mattered in competing for WLAN designs.

Are IPN2120 and IPN2220 useful today?
They are useful primarily as historical identifiers when researching older wireless cards, routers or computers. The documented products belong to an earlier generation of WLAN hardware, and the company itself was absorbed in 2005. Neither chip is a sensible choice for a current networking purchase; surviving listings or parts should be treated as obsolete and compatibility uncertain.
No reliable, directly attributable InProComm revenue, shipment or market-share figure is established in the available material, so the company’s scale should not be inferred from its product list or the named deployments.
