Yes. Hugh Howey has publicly praised Apple TV’s Silo, describing its casting and creative approach positively and saying he hopes viewers “enjoy the ride.” He also explains that adapting a novel requires changes, while keeping the central character and the story’s themes intact.
What has Hugh Howey said about Apple TV’s Silo?
In a first-person account on his official website, Howey writes that adapting a novel for film or television involves many decisions. He identifies the protagonist as the most important consideration: “The most important of these is your main character.”
Howey says he worked with Rebecca Ferguson on Juliette, the story’s central character, and praises the casting choice. He writes, “With SILO, we hit the bullseye on day one by landing Rebecca Fergusson.” The spelling “Fergusson” is reproduced as it appears in Howey’s quoted text.
He also praises series creator and showrunner Graham Yost, writing, “Graham took on SILO as a big fan of WOOL.” Howey’s account emphasizes that the adaptation makes decisions and changes, but that preserving Juliette and the story’s themes matters. He ends with: “I hope you enjoy the ride.”

Is Silo based on Wool?
Yes. Apple describes Silo as based on Hugh Howey’s dystopian trilogy, and Howey identifies WOOL as the original story that grew into a novel. The television series adapts that larger body of work rather than simply reproducing a single book unchanged.
Howey is credited as an executive producer. Apple identifies Graham Yost as the series creator and showrunner. In its December 16, 2024 renewal announcement, Yost said adapting Howey’s novels had been rewarding and that the team was pleased to bring the complete story to the screen over four seasons.

What is the story of the Apple TV series?
Apple’s official premise describes a society of 10,000 people living in a mile-deep underground silo. The residents believe the outside world is toxic, and people who seek to learn when or why the silo was built face fatal consequences. This is the fictional setup of the series, not a real-world account.
How many seasons of Silo are planned?
Apple announced renewals for seasons three and four in December 2024, describing season four as the conclusion of Howey’s trilogy adaptation. In a June 16, 2026 press release, Apple said season three has ten episodes, with its first episode scheduled for July 3, 2026, followed by weekly episodes through September 4, 2026. Apple also said season four would be the final season. Release schedules can change, so consult Apple’s current listing for the latest availability.
The season-three announcement says the story will move between the present and the “Before Times.” Apple’s description establishes the planned structure and schedule, not a comparative ranking of Silo against other science-fiction series. The phrase “most ambitious” is promotional framing, not a verified ranking.

Howey’s comments point to the key difference: a screen adaptation involves choices about how to carry a story and its protagonist into another medium. If you want to encounter the original story before seeing those choices, start with Wool. If you would rather discover the premise through performances and television storytelling first, begin with the series. The available statements from Howey do not provide a scene-by-scene comparison or establish that one order is better.
