R-32 is classified as A2L: it has lower flammability, but it is not nonflammable. A properly designed system includes safety measures, yet the refrigerant circuit is not a homeowner repair project. If you are buying, already own, or need service for an R-32 air conditioner or heat pump, confirm the system’s instructions and use a qualified technician for refrigerant work.
What R-32’s A2L classification means
R-32, also called HFC-32, is used in some air conditioners and heat pumps. In the United States, the EPA lists it as A2L for residential and light-commercial air conditioning and heat pumps, with a global warming potential (GWP) of 675 and an “Acceptable with Use Conditions” status. See the EPA SNAP listing for HFC-32.
A2L is a refrigerant safety classification. “Lower flammability” does not mean “nonflammable,” and the label is not a guarantee that any installation is safe regardless of how it is designed or serviced. ASHRAE’s residential safety framework addresses matters such as charge limits, accessories, and interconnecting piping to manage the consequences of a full release. The specific requirements depend on the equipment and applicable rules; consult the ASHRAE refrigeration resources and the product documentation.
The EPA’s listed GWP of 675 is an environmental-impact measure, not a measure of refrigerant concentration, ignition likelihood, or health risk. EPA also discusses a GWP-700 limit in the U.S. regulatory context for residential and light-commercial air conditioners, and says R-32 is below that limit. The limit is a regulatory threshold, not a safety rating; check the EPA HFC phasedown FAQ for current regulatory details.
#1 Best Overall
- Infrared Leak Detector: Compared with the heated diode leak detector, the infrared refrigerant leak detector has strong anti-interference ability, faster response speed, more accurate and longer service life.
- Higher Sensitivity: Adjustable sensitivity with High/Medium/Low levels and the maximum sensitivity is up to 0.14oz/yr.
- Detecting All Halogenated Gases: It can detect all kinds of halogen refrigerants including CFCs, HFCs, HCFCs, HCs, HFOs and mixed refrigerants such as R11/R22/R404a/R410a/R600a/R1234yf and Blends such as AZ-50, HP62, MP39 etc.
- 2.8' Large Screen: Do not missing any leakage. The peak display clearly indicates the orientation of the leak detection point and provides users with a quiet working environment.
- US Local Team R&D and Service: We offer 24/7 customer service and technical support.
What to ask before buying or replacing equipment
Do not assume an air conditioner or heat pump can use R-32 simply because a component or refrigerant container mentions it. The complete matched system must be designed and labeled for the specified refrigerant, and its installation must follow the applicable instructions and requirements.
- Confirm system compatibility: Ask the installer to identify the refrigerant on the equipment labels and in its documentation, and confirm that the indoor and outdoor components are a matched system designed for it.
- Ask about the installation: Find out how the product’s instructions and local requirements address refrigerant charge, equipment placement, required accessories, and service access.
- Clarify future service: Ask which qualified local technician can service this equipment and refrigerant. EPA’s homeowner resource for stationary refrigeration includes information about service and technician certification.
- Compare specific products, not refrigerant labels: Evaluate published efficiency, installed cost, warranty, and local service availability using documentation for the models you are considering. The cited sources do not establish that R-32 systems are universally more efficient, quieter, cheaper, or safer than every alternative.
What to do if you suspect a leak or need refrigerant service
Leave the sealed refrigerant circuit to qualified service personnel. Do not open it, connect gauges, handle refrigerant, attempt a recharge, or try to recover refrigerant yourself. Contact the equipment dealer or a qualified HVAC service provider, and follow the instructions for the exact equipment. EPA advises homeowners to learn about refrigerants before purchasing or repairing a residential air-conditioning system or heat pump.

- RECHARGEABLE LITHIUM BATTERY: A 2500mAh built-in lithium battery delivers up to 24 hours of continuous work on a single charge, so the detector is ready whenever a call comes in. Charges from any USB-C power source; cable included. No disposable batteries to buy or carry.
- HIGHLY SENSITIVE SENSOR: Japanese-made metal-oxide semiconductor sensor responds to the full halogenated refrigerant family, with selectable High and Low sensitivity so you can sweep an area broadly first, then switch down to close in on the exact joint.
- BEFORE YOUR FIRST JOB: Like all metal-oxide sensors, this detector reaches full sensitivity after running for several hours - leave it switched on in clean air when it is new or has been in storage. In use, switch it on in clean air away from the leak, then move the probe no faster than 1 inch (25 mm) per second, about 1/4 in from the joint, with fans and drafts off. This is what separates a found leak from a missed one.
- BROAD RANGE DETECTION: Both SFD200 and SFD201 respond to the full halogenated refrigerant family - CFCs: R11 R12 R113 R114; HCFCs: R21 R22 R31 R121 R122 R123 R124 R141b R142b R401a R402a R402b R408a R409a R509a; HFCs: R23 R32 R41 R125 R134a R143a R152a R404a R407c R410a R417a R507 R508a R508b; HFOs: R-1234yf R-1234ze R449a R452b R454a R455a R456a R457a R459a, and more. In addition, SFD201 also detects HC and combustible gases including R50/Methane, R170/Ethane, R290/Propane and R600a/Isobutane, plus natural gas, LPG, gasoline vapor and alcohol.
- LIVE PPM READING: A large color LCD shows the actual concentration in ppm plus a bar graph, so you can watch the number climb and narrow down to the exact joint instead of guessing from faster beeping. The buzzer follows the reading as well and can be muted when you need to work quietly.
Do not introduce flames or other ignition sources around a suspected leak. For an immediate safety concern, follow the product’s emergency instructions and local emergency guidance. There is no single evacuation distance or response procedure established here for every R-32 installation, so do not rely on generic online instructions in place of the equipment manual or local guidance.
The hazards are not limited to ignition. A Daikin manual for the equipment it covers warns that a large leak may displace oxygen, particularly in a basement, and that refrigerant exposed to fire can produce toxic gas. These are manufacturer warnings for covered equipment, not a quantified risk estimate for every room or system. Consult the actual system’s operating manual and contact the dealer for leaks, repair, or maintenance.

Refrigerant recovery is professional work. Daikin’s instructions for the equipment they cover call for qualified personnel, an A2L-designated recovery machine, and a recovery cylinder labeled for R-32. Do not treat those product-specific instructions as a universal service procedure; the technician must follow the requirements for the actual equipment. See the Daikin R-32 installation instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not confuse R-32 with products sold as “R-22a”
Names that sound similar do not indicate the same refrigerant or safety properties. The EPA warns that propane-based products marketed as “R-22a” are highly flammable and are not approved for use in existing air-conditioning systems. That warning concerns those products; it should not be conflated with R-32’s A2L classification. Check the EPA’s homeowner refrigerant guidance and the equipment label rather than relying on a product’s informal name.
