Home Assistant itself is free and requires no subscription, but that does not prove you can eliminate $455 in subscriptions. Whether you can cancel a paid service depends on the specific features you use, the devices involved, and any remaining hardware, cloud, or storage costs.
Is $455 a verified amount you can save?
No. The available information does not identify which subscriptions make up the $455, whether that figure is monthly or annual, or what household assumptions and arithmetic produced it. Treat it as a possible example, not an established saving. To calculate your own total, list the subscriptions you would actually cancel, use the amount you pay over the same period, and subtract any replacement costs.
What Home Assistant costs—and what may still cost money
Home Assistant’s official FAQ says: “Yes. Home Assistant is free and open source. There is no subscription to use it, and no features are locked behind a paywall.” The software still needs hardware to run. Home Assistant names Green as its recommended plug-and-play option; people with suitable existing hardware may not need to buy a dedicated system. The FAQ also lists optional Home Assistant Cloud and accessories such as Connect ZBT-2, which is not required for every installation. Home Assistant FAQ.
Optional Cloud features
Home Assistant Cloud is optional, and Home Assistant says, “Home Assistant works fully without it.” Cloud is for capabilities that benefit from a cloud connection. Home Assistant identifies secure remote access and Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa integrations among its Cloud features. Its documentation also lists speech-to-text, text-to-speech, offsite backup, webhooks, and improved WebRTC camera streaming. If you rely on these conveniences, include the cost of keeping Cloud in your post-switch budget rather than counting it as a subscription eliminated. Home Assistant Cloud and Cloud documentation.

Integrations do not guarantee paid-feature replacements
Home Assistant’s integration directory includes services such as Nest, Ring, Spotify, and Plex. That means there is a way to connect Home Assistant to those services; it does not establish that Home Assistant duplicates every paid feature, such as cloud recording, storage, media access, support, or convenience. Check the integration and your device’s requirements against the exact service features you use. Home Assistant integrations.
For cameras, distinguish automation and control from recording and retention. A setup that receives an event or triggers an automation is not automatically a substitute for a paid plan’s event history or continuous recording. The available sources do not establish feature parity for a particular Ring or Nest camera setup, so do not assume Home Assistant alone replaces paid camera recording or alerts.

Camera-plan example: Google Home Premium
Google announced Google Home Premium on October 1, 2025. The announcement listed the following US prices and camera-history features; they are dated announcement figures, not a guarantee of current prices or availability in every country.

|---|---|---|
| Standard | $10 per month or $100 per year | 30 days of video history |

Google support says camera-history features vary by device and region and directs customers to the Google Store for current prices. How to decide whether a subscription is replaceable
- Write down the feature you pay for. Be precise: remote access, a camera alert, event history, continuous recording, media access, or another function.
- Check whether your device and service expose that function to Home Assistant. An integration listing alone does not confirm that a paid feature is available or equivalent.
- Identify what provides the replacement. Separate Home Assistant’s local automation and control from any cloud service, compatible hardware, or storage needed for the outcome you want.
- Compare costs over the same period. Include subscription fees you can actually cancel, any hardware purchase, and recurring Cloud or storage costs you choose to retain.
- Check local eligibility and billing. Camera-plan prices and features can depend on region, device, and plan; verify current details with the provider before making a cancellation decision.
A community question about an upcoming Ring renewal asks whether Ring Protect functions can be reproduced with Home Assistant or replacement hardware. That is a useful example of the decision readers face, but it does not demonstrate that those functions can be reproduced. Home Assistant Community discussion.
