Headphone impedance and sensitivity help you judge whether a phone, laptop, audio interface, or amplifier can drive a pair of wired headphones to your preferred listening level. Neither number rates sound quality, and impedance by itself cannot tell you whether headphones will be loud enough. You need to consider the headphone’s specifications alongside the exact output capability of the source.
What is headphone impedance?
Impedance is the electrical load a headphone presents to its audio source. It is measured in ohms (Ω). A source’s output voltage and the headphone’s impedance affect how much electrical power reaches the headphone, but impedance alone does not establish loudness or sound quality. Shure explicitly cautions that a higher ohms number does not mean a headphone will sound better (Shure, “Earphone & Headphone Specifications Explained”).
Headphone impedance is also different from a source’s output impedance. Shure advises that the source output impedance be lower than the headphone impedance, often by a factor of eight. Treat that as Shure’s matching guidance, not a universal rule that replaces the source and headphone makers’ specifications.
What does headphone sensitivity mean?
Sensitivity describes the sound-pressure level (SPL) a headphone produces for a stated electrical input. A common specification is dB SPL/mW: the SPL associated with one milliwatt of input power. Under the same measurement convention, a more sensitive headphone generally produces more SPL from the specified input. Shure explains sensitivity as a guide to how loud a headphone may get for a given input power (Shure’s headphone specification guide).

- Lightweight 1.38 in neodymium dynamic drivers deliver a punchy, rhythmic response to even the most demanding tracks. Driver Unit: Dome type.Specific uses for product : Travel
- The swiveling earcup design allows easy storage when you’re not using them, and enhances portability when you’re traveling
- Cushioned earpads for total comfort and enfolding closed-back design seals in sound
- The wide frequency range—spanning 12 Hz to 22 kHz—delivers deep bass, rich midrange, and soaring highs
- Plug: L-shaped stereo mini plug 3.5mm. Impedance (Ohm) 24 ohm (1KHz). Cord Length 3.94 ft
Read the unit and reference carefully. A sensitivity figure stated against voltage is not directly interchangeable with one stated against power, and the source must be able to provide the relevant input into that headphone’s load. Manufacturer pages do not establish one harmonized measurement protocol across all brands, so compare the stated units and any measurement conditions rather than assuming every published number was obtained identically.
What headphone impedance should I choose?
There is no universal impedance cutoff that guarantees compatibility. Lower-impedance headphones are often a practical starting point for portable devices, while higher-impedance models are commonly associated with studio equipment or dedicated amplification—but the actual source model matters more than a broad category label.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Manufacturers’ examples are guides, not a shared classification standard:
| Impedance examples | How the manufacturer frames them | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 18, 32, and 80 Ω | Common lower-range examples | beyerdynamic, 2024 |
| 250 Ω | Common higher-range example | beyerdynamic, 2024 |
| 16–64 Ω; approximately 120 Ω; 150–300 Ω | Typical guides; check the exact headphone and source specifications | Sennheiser Consumer Hearing, 2026 |
| 600 Ω | Example of a higher-impedance headphone | beyerdynamic, 2024 |
The electrical trade-off is easier to see with a stated example. beyerdynamic compares an 80 Ω DT 770 PRO, drawing 12.5 mW at an assumed 1 V, with a 600 Ω DT 990 Edition, drawing 1.6 mW at the same assumed voltage (beyerdynamic’s impedance-selection explanation). These are illustrative calculations, not a claim about the output voltage of a typical phone or laptop. They also do not show which headphone will be louder: sensitivity matters too.

How to check whether your phone, laptop, or interface can drive headphones
- Identify the actual source. Find the exact phone, laptop, interface, or amplifier model and consult its current headphone-output specifications. Device categories alone are not enough to establish output capability.
- Check the exact headphone model and version. Record its nominal impedance, sensitivity value, reference unit, and any stated measurement conditions.
- Compare output capability with the headphone and your needs. Consider whether the source can provide the required output at that load and whether the resulting level will suit your content and listening environment. There is no single impedance figure that answers this without the other specifications.
- Consider amplification only if needed. If the source cannot reach your desired level with that particular headphone, a compatible headphone amplifier or portable DAC with headphone amplification may help. If it can, the impedance number alone is not a reason to buy one.
- Make the comfort and sound decision separately. Fit, open- or closed-back design, preferred sound, intended use, and return options are not captured by impedance or sensitivity.
Do I need an amp for high-impedance headphones?
Not automatically. Higher impedance can place greater demands on a source, but the headphone’s sensitivity and the source’s available output also affect whether it will reach your preferred level. Focusrite says higher-impedance headphones generally require more power from an interface’s headphone output than lower-impedance headphones, while also emphasizing that compatibility depends on the specific interface and headphone (Focusrite, “What impedance headphones should I use with my interface?”).
Focusrite’s published maximum recommended headphone impedances illustrate why there is no one threshold for all audio interfaces:

| Focusrite product range | Maximum recommended headphone impedance |
|---|---|

These are Focusrite’s recommendations for the named interface families, published in guidance updated December 2, 2024—not general limits for every interface or source. Focusrite also says you do not need to match a headphone’s impedance to the Scarlett’s impedance, or to use headphones below it. Check the current documentation for your exact equipment before deciding.

What the numbers cannot tell you
- Sound quality: Impedance does not rank fidelity or mean that one headphone sounds better than another.
- Guaranteed loudness: Loudness depends on the source output, headphone impedance and sensitivity, and the listener’s desired level and environment.
- Personal fit or preference: Electrical specifications do not tell you whether the headphones will be comfortable or whether their sound signature suits you; Shure notes that people can experience headphones differently.
- A safe listening level: These specifications do not establish a safe exposure threshold. Use care with volume, particularly when a source can deliver substantial headphone power.
