You can run Jellyfin on modest hardware if your devices can direct play your media. If the server must transcode video—especially when converting HDR to SDR—hardware demands rise sharply. For a typical setup, Jellyfin recommends 8 GB of RAM, an SSD for the operating system and application files, and a wired gigabit network connection. Choose the processor or GPU around the formats you play and how often Jellyfin must convert them.

Start with the kind of playback Jellyfin must handle

Direct play means a playback device can use the media file as stored, so Jellyfin does not need to transcode the video. This is the lightest workload and can make a low-power system practical. When a client cannot play a file’s format or needs a different stream, Jellyfin may transcode it. The client’s profile informs Jellyfin’s transcoding choices; the file, client, and playback conditions determine what work is required. See Jellyfin’s client documentation and codec support guidance.

Transcoding video on the CPU can be demanding. HDR-to-SDR tone-mapping can be particularly intensive when done in software. Jellyfin therefore recommends a GPU for video-transcoding workloads, but that does not mean every server needs a discrete graphics card: direct-play-focused installations and modest setups may be suitable for integrated graphics.

Choose a build path

Build path Jellyfin’s guidance Best fit and checks
Integrated graphics Jellyfin lists Intel N-series platforms (12th generation or newer for low-power platforms), including the Intel N100, selected Intel Core and Pentium processors, and Apple M-series or newer. It recommends 8 GB RAM for an average deployment. A reasonable starting point for a low-power server and a modest transcoding load. Confirm the exact chip can decode the source formats you use and encode the formats your clients need.
Dedicated GPU Jellyfin recommends Intel Arc A-series or newer, or NVIDIA GTX 16-series or RTX 20-series or newer; the GTX 1650 is excluded from its recommendation. The guide gives a lower CPU baseline for systems with a dedicated GPU. Arc B-series requires Resizable BAR (ReBAR); A-series benefits from it. Consider this route when video transcoding is a regular requirement. Verify codec support, driver and operating-system compatibility, and idle power for the exact GPU.
No GPU; software video transcoding Jellyfin does not recommend this path for video-transcoding workloads. Software HDR-to-SDR tone-mapping may need a high-end CPU and still fail to meet real-time demands for challenging content. Most suitable when clients can direct play, or when you have verified that the particular software transcodes you need run in real time.
Existing NAS or single-board computer Jellyfin cautions that prebuilt NAS constraints and most SBCs, including Raspberry Pi 5, can make them poor choices. It names RK3588/RK3588S as an SBC option for advanced users. Check whether Jellyfin is supported on the appliance’s operating system, whether the CPU is sufficient, and whether acceleration works for your actual codecs.

These are Jellyfin Project recommendations, not guarantees for every library or stream count. The guide’s hardware comparisons can change as processors, GPUs, drivers, and codecs evolve; use its current hardware-selection guide when choosing a specific system.

Match the CPU and graphics to the media pipeline

A GPU may accelerate some stages of a transcode without accelerating every stage. Decoding, deinterlacing, scaling, tone-mapping, subtitle burn-in, and encoding can have different hardware and software support. If a stage falls back to the CPU, the server can still have substantial processor load even when hardware acceleration is enabled.

Jellyfin documents Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV), NVIDIA NVDEC/NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel and AMD VA-API on Linux, Apple Video Toolbox on macOS, and Rockchip RKMPP on Linux. Which options work depends on the GPU generation, operating system, drivers, and installation method. Follow the hardware-acceleration setup instructions, including any requirement to use Jellyfin’s own FFmpeg build, then test a transcode with the formats and processing steps you expect to use.

The project recommends hardware capable of HEVC 10-bit decoding. It says modern CPUs with four threads can generally handle older unsupported video formats when acceleration is configured, but this is workload guidance—not a guarantee for every four-thread processor. HEVC, VP9, and AV1 software decoding can be demanding. Audio transcoding and software video decoding also use the CPU.

Jellyfin’s current guide prefers Intel on non-Apple systems for encoder quality and easier Linux setup, while cautioning about AMD encoder quality and driver support. It qualifies its encoder-quality ordering as reflecting default settings; configuration can affect results, so do not treat it as a universal benchmark.

Plan memory, application storage, and media storage separately

Memory

Jellyfin recommends 8 GB RAM for an average deployment. It says 4 GB may be enough for a Linux server without a graphical interface and suggests more memory on Windows 11 because the operating system uses more. The project does not provide a reliable memory-per-stream formula, so use these as starting recommendations rather than universal minimums.

Operating system, Jellyfin files, and transcode cache

Jellyfin recommends a 100 GB SSD for the operating system, Jellyfin files, and transcoding cache. Its guide suggests estimating transcode-file space by multiplying the largest media file by the maximum number of concurrent streams. That is a rule of thumb, not a prediction that every session will consume that full amount. The hardware guide also advises against SMR mechanical drives for Jellyfin application files.

Media library and database

Media capacity depends on the size and growth of your collection; there is no universal drive size. Jellyfin says media storage needs sequential throughput greater than the media bitrate and can be on a network share or cloud storage mounted on the host. Keep the database local rather than placing it on a network device. See Jellyfin’s storage guidance.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Use wired networking, especially for remote playback

Jellyfin recommends gigabit Ethernet or faster and advises connecting the server by wired Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi or powerline. For remote access, its guide gives at least 20 Mbps upload as a guideline, not a per-stream guarantee. If total upload is below 100 Mbps, Jellyfin recommends limiting its bandwidth to 70% of the connection’s upload speed to leave capacity for other internet use. Actual needs depend on each remote stream’s bitrate and competing household traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Jellyfin says the server is not designed to be exposed directly to the internet. Keep it behind a properly configured firewall or another secure network environment, following the project’s networking guidance.

A practical way to decide what to buy

  1. Check your playback devices. Identify the formats and codecs they can play directly, including the media you expect to watch remotely.
  2. List the transcodes you actually need. Account for source and target codecs, simultaneous viewers, HDR-to-SDR conversion, and subtitle burn-in. These steps can change the workload substantially.
  3. Choose integrated graphics or a GPU accordingly. For mostly direct play and modest needs, consider a supported low-power integrated-graphics system. For regular video transcoding, select a GPU only after checking codec capability and support on your chosen operating system.
  4. Set aside room for the server itself. Start with Jellyfin’s recommendations of 8 GB RAM and a 100 GB SSD for the OS, application files, and cache; adjust for the operating system and expected workload.
  5. Size media storage to your collection. Keep the database local, and ensure the media storage can deliver more sequential throughput than the media bitrate.
  6. Connect the server by Ethernet. Check upload capacity if you will stream remotely, and secure the server rather than exposing it directly to the internet.
  7. Validate the complete setup. Enable the appropriate acceleration method and test representative files, including the codecs, subtitle behavior, and tone-mapping you expect. Confirm that playback is smooth and that the intended hardware is doing the work.
