It depends on the kind of message and whether your phone has Wi-Fi. With Airplane Mode on and no Wi-Fi connection, your phone has no internet path for iMessage and no cellular connection for ordinary carrier messaging. If you turn Wi-Fi back on and connect to the internet, iMessage may still arrive; SMS/MMS and RCS depend on carrier service and support.
What Airplane Mode changes
Airplane Mode disables wireless radios used for network connections. On Apple devices, Bluetooth is an exception, and Apple says Wi-Fi and Bluetooth can still be used in Airplane Mode if the airline allows it. You can switch Wi-Fi back on while Airplane Mode remains enabled; that can restore an internet connection without restoring cellular service. See Apple’s Airplane Mode guidance.
What happens to each type of text

Apple explains the distinctions in “What is the difference between iMessage, RCS and SMS/MMS?” Bubble color alone does not tell you the full delivery path: the service, device, operating system, and carrier support matter.
What the sender may see
There is no universal sender-visible status or delivery guarantee across these services. A message may remain pending or be retried, but the timing and behavior depend on the service and carrier. The official material does not establish one retry interval for SMS/MMS or RCS.

How to get messages while Airplane Mode is on
- Leave Airplane Mode enabled.
- Turn Wi-Fi on in your phone’s settings or quick controls.
- Connect to a Wi-Fi network with internet access. This gives internet-based messaging such as iMessage a possible route, but does not restore cellular service.
- If you are expecting SMS/MMS or RCS, turn Airplane Mode off when it is appropriate and allow the phone to reconnect to a supported carrier service.
Why results differ by phone and carrier
Apple’s Airplane Mode instructions describe Apple products, not a universal rule for every Android phone. RCS and other carrier messaging features can vary by carrier, device, software version, plan, and region. For a definitive answer about a particular setup, check the current documentation from your carrier and phone maker; Apple’s developer documentation describes carrier messaging support but is not a user-facing delivery guarantee.
