Turning off 802.11b support can stop devices that rely only on 802.11b from connecting, while newer devices may continue to work. It does not necessarily turn off the 2.4 GHz radio, and any speed improvement depends on what your router disables and which devices use the network.
What does “turn off 802.11b” mean?
Router settings use different labels for different changes. One control may remove the legacy 1, 2, 5.5, and 11 Mb/s rates; another may set a higher mandatory or basic rate; a third may disable a broader wireless mode or the entire 2.4 GHz radio. These changes are not equivalent. Check your router’s manual for the exact effect before changing the setting.
For example, Cisco’s controller guidance describes disabling 802.11b rates while leaving 802.11g/n support available: Cisco guidance on wireless rate settings. A Cisco 800 Series guide says that setting a basic rate of 12 Mb/s or higher on an 802.11g radio prevents 802.11b clients from associating: Cisco 800 Series radio configuration guide. These are examples for particular equipment, not universal menu instructions.
802.11b support and the 2.4 GHz band are separate concepts. A router can keep its 2.4 GHz radio enabled while no longer supporting 802.11b rates. Cisco’s Catalyst 9800 documentation likewise treats 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g/n and newer wireless capabilities as distinct configuration topics; its enterprise-controller interface may not match a home router: Cisco Catalyst 9800 configuration guide.

Which devices may stop connecting?
802.11b-only devices
A device that supports only 802.11b may fail to join if the network removes the rates it needs or requires a higher rate it cannot use. A printer, camera, scanner, point-of-sale terminal, or appliance is not necessarily 802.11b-only just because it is old. Check its manual or network status page for its supported Wi-Fi standards and bands.
Devices that support newer Wi-Fi modes
Devices supporting 802.11g, 802.11n, or later modes can generally remain connected if the router continues to enable the modes and rates they need, along with the required band and security settings. Disabling 802.11b alone does not necessarily disable 2.4 GHz or prevent newer 2.4 GHz clients from connecting.

- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Will my old printer still connect?
It will if it supports one of the remaining modes and rates and is compatible with the network’s band and security settings. If it supports only 802.11b, disabling the required legacy rates can prevent it from associating. Check the printer’s specifications before changing the setting; the same approach applies to other essential older devices.

It might help in some configurations, but there is no universal speed gain or percentage to expect. Removing low legacy rates can reduce time spent transmitting some frames at those rates. Cisco’s 800 Series guide describes a configuration that disables 802.11b protection and provides maximum throughput for 802.11g clients, but that is configuration-specific guidance, not a measured result for every router or household. Cisco also warns that disabling protection can affect legacy stations or access points in range: Cisco AP541N advanced settings.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
The outcome depends on the router’s implementation, the mix of clients, and network conditions. Do not disable protection settings simply because you expect a speed boost.

How to decide whether to disable it
- List the devices that need the network. Pay special attention to older printers, scanners, cameras, point-of-sale equipment, and embedded devices.
- Check each device’s Wi-Fi capabilities. Use its documentation or status page to confirm supported standards, bands, and security requirements. Do not infer 802.11b-only support from a device’s age.
- Identify exactly what the router setting changes. Confirm whether it removes 802.11b rates, changes basic rates, disables a broader mode, or turns off the 2.4 GHz radio. Follow instructions for your router’s model and firmware.
- Keep compatibility where it is needed. If an essential device is 802.11b-only, retain compatibility on the relevant network or use a separate compatible network if your router supports one.
- Change the setting and test important devices. If nothing required depends on 802.11b, disable it according to the manufacturer’s instructions, then verify that essential clients can still connect.
What to do if a device stops connecting
- Restore the previous setting. If the device reconnects, that helps confirm the change caused the problem.
- Check what was disabled. Review the router’s documentation to distinguish a rate change from a disabled radio or broader wireless mode.
- Check the client requirements. Verify its supported Wi-Fi standards, band, and security settings against the network configuration.
- Consider an adapter for a computer. Cisco suggests a wireless USB adapter for a computer whose old built-in Wi-Fi adapter cannot use the network. Confirm operating-system, band, and security compatibility before choosing one. This may not be an option for embedded devices such as printers or appliances: Cisco’s adapter workaround.
