If a UPI payment to the wrong ID is marked successful, you generally cannot stop it or count on an automatic refund. Contact your bank promptly and report the transfer; the bank can explain whether it can try to recover the money, but recovery is not guaranteed. First check the transaction status: a pending or failed debit is different from a successfully completed payment.

Check whether the payment succeeded

Open the transaction history in the UPI app you used and confirm the status and recipient details. NPCI says users can review transaction history and raise or check a grievance through the participating bank’s UPI app (NPCI UPI FAQ).

  • Successful: The payment has been initiated and completed. If it went to the wrong person, contact your bank directly.
  • Pending or failed: Do not treat this as a completed mistaken transfer. NPCI says a wrong debit for a pending or failed transaction will be credited back; check the status and follow the app or bank’s instructions (NPCI UPI Help).

If a successful payment went to the wrong UPI ID

Report it to your bank promptly

Use your bank’s official support channel, such as the number or complaint option in its app or on its website. NPCI says, “No, once the payment is initiated, it cannot be stopped” (NPCI UPI FAQ). Report the mistake anyway: your bank can register the complaint and tell you what action it can take.

Provide the transaction reference, date, amount, recipient UPI ID and the status shown in the app. Ask for a complaint or service-request number and whether the bank can approach the recipient’s bank about recovery. NPCI describes a dispute and recovery process for incorrect IMPS transfers, but that is not a UPI-specific guarantee or proof that the recipient’s bank will return a successful UPI payment (NPCI IMPS circular).

Set realistic expectations

The NPCI guidance reviewed does not promise that a successfully completed UPI transfer to an unintended recipient will be reversed, or set a uniform recovery timeline. A bank may pursue a recovery request, but a request is not a guarantee that the funds will come back. Keep the complaint number and follow up with your bank for updates.

Why the in-app complaint option may not fit

NPCI’s UPI Help guidance says complaints can be raised on debit transactions except successful person-to-person transactions. Its guidance about crediting back a wrong debit applies to pending or failed transactions; it does not mean a successful payment to the wrong person automatically reverses (NPCI UPI Help). For a successful mistaken person-to-person payment, contact your bank directly rather than assuming the app’s complaint flow covers it.

Protect yourself while seeking help

Use only your bank’s official support channels. Never disclose your UPI PIN to someone claiming to arrange a refund: NPCI says your bank’s customer support will never ask for it (NPCI UPI FAQ). You do not need to approve a collect request or share a PIN to receive a refund.

Check the recipient name before your next payment

Before entering your UPI PIN, compare the beneficiary name shown in the app with the person or business you intend to pay. RBI says UPI enables a remitter to verify the beneficiary’s name before initiating a transfer (RBI notification, 30 December 2024). NPCI’s circular dated 24 April 2025 instructed UPI apps to display the ultimate beneficiary’s bank-record name on the pre-transaction details page and not let users modify that name for transaction purposes; its stated compliance date was 30 June 2025 (NPCI circular). If the name is missing or does not match, stop and confirm the details before authorising the payment.
