If a Bitcoin transaction is confirmed, the Bitcoin network cannot undo it. If the address belongs to someone or a service, ask them to return the funds; if nobody controls the address, the Bitcoin may be inaccessible. First check whether the transaction is pending or confirmed and verify the destination.
Can you reverse a Bitcoin transaction sent to the wrong address?
No. Bitcoin has no central authority or sender-side undo button for a confirmed on-chain transaction. Bitcoin.org explains: “Bitcoin transactions are irreversible: once confirmed, they can only be refunded by the person receiving the funds.”
Recovery therefore depends on who controls the destination. If it belongs to an identifiable person or service, that recipient must cooperate and send the Bitcoin back. If the address is valid but no one controls its keys, the funds may be permanently inaccessible. A wallet provider cannot retrieve Bitcoin from an address whose private keys it does not control.
What to do after sending Bitcoin to the wrong address
- Check the transaction in the sending wallet or platform. Confirm the status, destination address, asset, and transaction details. If it is pending, check that service’s interface for a cancellation option; availability depends on the service.
- Contact the recipient if you can identify them. Use a trusted channel and ask them to return the funds. If the destination is a deposit address at an exchange or other service, contact its official support and provide the transaction identifier and other details it requests.
- If the payment is missing, verify what was sent and where. Share the transaction link or relevant details with the recipient and ask them to check the receiving address and supported asset and network. A mismatch can explain why a payment does not appear; Bitcoin.com describes BTC/BCH confusion as one example: Bitcoin.com Support: BTC sent to a BCH address, or vice versa.
- Protect your wallet secrets. Do not give anyone your seed phrase or private key, even if they claim they can recover the transfer. Bitcoin.org says legitimate support will not ask for either: Bitcoin.org scam guidance.
What if the transaction is still pending?
A pending transaction is not the same as a confirmed one, but that does not mean you can cancel it. Check the sending service’s own interface for any cancellation control. The rules depend on the service and transaction type: for example, Coinbase documents a limited pending-transfer case involving an email-linked account, while saying cryptocurrency sent to an address cannot be canceled or reversed. That Coinbase-specific exception is not a general Bitcoin feature: Coinbase Help: canceling a pending transaction.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Why a wrong address may still receive Bitcoin
Bitcoin wallets can detect many invalid addresses, but a different valid address can still belong to someone other than the intended recipient. An address passing a validity check does not prove it is the right address. Bitcoin.org explains this distinction in its user guidance: Bitcoin.org guidance on protecting your privacy.
Whether a platform can help with a transfer to one of its own deposit addresses depends on the platform’s policies and the particular transfer. A support team may investigate, but there is no universal entitlement to recovery and no guarantee it can return the funds. Coinbase’s guidance recommends contacting the recipient when a transfer was sent to the wrong person: Coinbase Help: crypto sent to the wrong person.

How to reduce the risk next time
- Verify the entire receiving address against a trusted source; do not rely only on a few characters at the beginning or end.
- For a large transfer, consider sending a small test amount and confirming that it arrives before sending the rest.
- Confirm that the asset and network match what the recipient or receiving service supports.
