If your stored data is then over the allowance you keep, iCloud stops syncing or updating information and your iCloud backups do not complete. Apple’s guidance does not say that cancellation instantly deletes all your files or photos, so make a verified copy of anything important before changing plans.
What changes when your iCloud+ plan ends?
Apple says a downgrade or cancellation takes effect after the current subscription billing period. Check the end date shown for your subscription; until then, your existing plan remains in effect.
After the change, compare your iCloud storage use with the allowance that remains. If you are using more than that allowance, iCloud services that depend on storage will not operate normally:
- iCloud device backups will not complete.
- New photos and videos will not upload to iCloud Photos.
- iCloud Drive and other iCloud apps will stop staying up to date across your devices.
- You will not be able to send or receive email using an iCloud email address while storage is full.
These limits apply when your use exceeds the available storage; canceling does not by itself mean every service stops if your data fits within the allowance. Apple says syncing and backups resume after you increase capacity or delete enough information to make room. Apple’s downgrade and cancellation guidance and storage-management guidance describe these effects.

Will your iCloud photos and files be deleted?
Apple’s cited plan-change guidance does not say that all existing iCloud content is automatically deleted when a subscription ends, and it does not give one retention period that applies to every type of content. It does explain the syncing and backup limits that apply when storage use is over the new quota. Do not assume either immediate deletion or indefinite retention.
Before changing plans, copy important photos, files, and other data to a location you can verify. Downloaded files can be kept on a computer or, optionally, an external drive or SSD; choose capacity based on the amount you are copying. Confirm the copy opens before removing anything from iCloud.

Be especially careful with synced content. Apple says deleting a photo in iCloud Photos on one device also deletes it from the other devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Deletion is not a way to make a local-only copy, so preserve a separate copy first. See Apple’s instructions for managing iCloud storage.
What happens to iCloud+ features?
Moving to the free plan removes iCloud+ benefits. Apple lists Hide My Email, Private Relay, Apple Invites, and HomeKit Secure Video support as examples. Feature availability varies by country or region, so check which benefits are available and in use on your account before canceling. Apple’s plan-change page describes the effects of downgrading.

Check Apple One and Family Sharing before canceling
If you have Apple One
If you pay for both Apple One and a separate iCloud+ plan, Apple says you can cancel or downgrade the separate plan and use the iCloud+ storage included with Apple One. Check the storage allowance attached to your actual Apple One subscription and your current use before making the change; the included capacity depends on the bundle you have.
If you use a family member’s shared iCloud+
If you leave a Family Sharing group that shares iCloud+, Apple says a member using more than 5 GB can buy an individual plan to continue using iCloud storage. Without sufficient storage, new photos and files will not upload and device backups will stop. Check the shared allowance and your own storage use before leaving or changing the group plan. How to decide whether to cancel or downgrade
- Storage: Check what is currently stored in iCloud and compare it with the capacity that will remain, including any Apple One or Family Sharing allowance.
- Services you rely on: Consider whether you depend on iCloud Photos uploads, iCloud Drive syncing, iCloud Mail, or device backups.
- iCloud+ benefits: Identify whether you use features such as Hide My Email, Private Relay, Apple Invites, or HomeKit Secure Video.
- Verified copies: Make and check a separate copy of important content before changing your plan or deleting synced items.
Prepare for the change and recover if you run out of space
- Check your storage use. Review iCloud storage on your Apple device and identify which content is taking up space.
- Confirm your remaining allowance. Account for storage included with Apple One or shared through Family Sharing, if applicable.
- Copy important data that will not fit. Download or copy the relevant content and verify the copy before deleting anything from iCloud. Apple provides platform-specific steps on its storage-management page.
- Check the subscription end date. The downgrade or cancellation takes effect when the current billing period ends, not when you initiate the change.
- If you are over quota afterward, make room or restore capacity. Delete enough iCloud data to fit the remaining allowance, or increase storage. Apple says syncing and backups resume when there is enough space or capacity is increased.
