When a data center loses utility power, UPS batteries take over immediately while generators start. If every usable backup path fails or its energy or fuel runs out, affected equipment loses power. Services may go offline, and restoring electricity does not restore them instantly: systems must restart and data may need to synchronize.

How a data center loses power

  1. Utility power fails or becomes unacceptable. Some facilities use multiple utility feeds and redundant power paths, but the arrangements vary. Microsoft says its facilities use multiple power or utility feeds alongside UPS systems and generators. Microsoft describes its datacenter power architecture.
  2. The UPS bridges the interruption. Microsoft says UPS systems come online instantly when power fails or drops below an acceptable voltage, supplying power while generators take over. Batteries can also ride through short disturbances or provide time for an orderly shutdown. Runtime depends on the supported load and system design; there is no single runtime for all data centers. Microsoft’s overview and Google’s explanation of data-center batteries describe these roles.
  3. Generators or another alternate source carry a longer outage. Microsoft describes onsite emergency generators, fuel reserves, and emergency fuel delivery arrangements at its facilities. Backup generation still depends on equipment starting, fuel being available, and the power path working. These are Microsoft’s arrangements, not a guarantee about every operator.
  4. If no usable source remains, equipment loses power. Depending on the energy left in batteries and the shutdown controls, systems may shut down cleanly or lose power before they can. Google notes that batteries can give machines enough power to execute a clean shutdown if a facility loses both primary and alternate sources for an extended period. That outcome is possible, not assured.
  5. Service recovery begins after power returns. Equipment and applications have to restart, and databases may need to synchronize. Uptime Institute says this work can take many hours even when power diagnosis and restoration are quick. Damaged equipment or unavailable replacements can prolong the interruption.

What “runs out of backup power” can mean

The phrase covers several different failures, not just a battery reaching zero. A facility may lose backup because batteries are depleted, a generator fails to start or run, fuel is unavailable, a transfer switch or distribution path fails, or the remaining redundant path is lost. Uptime Institute identifies UPS, generator, and transfer-switch failures among causes reported for power-related outages. Its 2023 survey is about reported causes, not universal component failure rates.

  • A UPS may fail or provide less usable runtime than the load requires.
  • A generator may fail, be unavailable for maintenance, or lack usable fuel.
  • A switching or distribution fault may prevent power from reaching equipment even when a source is available.
  • Multiple nominally redundant paths may share an upstream dependency, so one event can affect more than one path.

Uptime Institute’s 2023 survey found that 40% of respondents reporting a major power-related outage selected UPS failure as a cause; 27% selected generator failure, and 27% selected transfer-switch failure. Respondents could select up to three causes, so these are survey response shares—not the probability that a particular UPS, generator, or switch will fail. The same report says UPS problems become more likely with age and describes battery management, monitoring, and replacement schedules as relevant controls; it also discusses generator maintenance, fuel checks, and testing.

How wide the outage spreads

The affected area depends on the independence of power paths, which loads each path supports, what stays powered, and how services are deployed. Redundancy only helps when the alternate route can actually supply the affected load; two feeds that depend on the same upstream source may not protect against its failure.

Facility and rack power paths

Power can be arranged in different ways, from centralized backup paths to rack-level designs. The important questions are how many paths exist, whether they are independent, what load each UPS supports, and whether switching and distribution continue to work. There is no single topology that is best for every facility.

NVIDIA’s guidance for DGX H100 systems illustrates why the details matter: in a traditional two-source setup, losing one source can leave too few energized power supplies to keep the system running, stopping an active multi-node job. NVIDIA’s enhanced N+1 example uses three discrete UPS and distribution paths to tolerate a single upstream-path event. These are DGX H100-specific requirements and examples, not a prescription for all data centers. NVIDIA’s DGX H100 power-cabling guidance.

Applications spread across locations

A power failure at one facility does not have to take down an application deployed across separate locations—but only if the application, its data, and its failover process are designed to work that way. AWS describes Availability Zones as physically separated locations with redundant power and networking, and offers customers ways to architect automatic failover between zones. This is a deployment option, not an automatic safeguard for every workload. AWS explains its global infrastructure and Availability Zones.

Cooling and supporting systems

Servers also depend on facility systems such as HVAC and temperature and humidity monitoring. AWS lists these among the systems used to protect servers and reduce outage risk. If a power event also disables cooling, heat can become another constraint, but the reviewed sources do not establish a universal temperature timeline for shutdown.

What outage statistics can—and cannot—tell you

Uptime Institute reported in 2023 that 42% of respondents said their organization had experienced an outage in the previous three years caused by a third-party supplier. That figure covers outages broadly; it is not a measure of backup-power failures. The report also calls power-related outages a longstanding challenge for data-center management, but survey findings should not be read as predictions for a particular site.

For a specific facility, meaningful comparisons require details that public survey percentages cannot supply: the number and independence of its power paths, UPS runtime at the actual load, generator start and transfer arrangements, fuel planning, maintenance and testing, which cooling and control systems remain powered, and whether applications can fail over elsewhere.

What a UPS does—and does not do

An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is the immediate battery-backed layer between utility power and equipment. Its job is to bridge an interruption, support a short disturbance, or allow a controlled shutdown while another source takes over. It is not, by itself, a substitute for long-duration generation or a guarantee that a whole facility will remain online.

A small-server or home-office UPS is useful only as a scale analogy for that bridging role. Its runtime depends on the specific unit, battery configuration, and connected load; consumer hardware cannot power a data center. For any UPS, avoid relying on a runtime figure without the exact model, load, and configuration.

Why the service can remain down after electricity returns

Restoring the power path is only one part of recovery. Operators may need to identify the fault, restore affected distribution, restart equipment and applications, and synchronize databases. Uptime Institute notes that restarting IT and fully synchronizing databases can take many hours even when diagnosing and restoring power is comparatively quick. If equipment must be replaced, service may remain unavailable until replacement hardware is installed.
