Each developer decides whether the existing save remains compatible, progress resets, or selected items and unlocks transfer. Check the game’s own 1.0 announcement or FAQ for the exact policy and any steps you must take.
Your purchase remains; your save may not
Steam Support says you keep access to a purchased game when it moves from Early Access to full release. That answers whether you can continue accessing the game—not whether your existing save will work in the released version. Steam’s Early Access FAQ also says the developer decides when its game is ready to leave Early Access.

Leaving Early Access is a store-status change. Steamworks describes the Released status as appropriate when a developer considers a game feature-complete and no longer significantly changing. That transition does not, by itself, determine what happens to saved progress. Developers are encouraged to set expectations clearly, including when an update will break saves. Steamworks’ Early Access guidance is therefore not a universal save-migration promise.
“Progress” can mean more than one thing
A game may treat different parts of your playthrough differently. Look for separate answers about:

- Save compatibility: Whether the released version can load your Early Access save.
- Campaign or world state: Whether your story, world, or playthrough continues—or you must begin again.
- Currency and unlocks: Whether earned currency, classes, equipment, or other unlocks transfer.
- Cosmetics and DLC: Whether purchases remain available or need to be reclaimed through a process.
- Achievements: Whether they remain earned or require specific steps. Steam’s platform guidance does not establish a general achievement rule for Early Access transitions.
How developers have handled 1.0 transitions
These examples show different title-specific choices; neither sets a rule for other Steam games.
Roboquest: partial recovery from an Early Access save
After players criticized progress loss with version 1.0, the developers said they could not initially find a clean way to preserve all progress. In version 1.0.1, they added a prompt to restore Wrenches spent and classes unlocked during Early Access, using the remaining Early Access save. The recovery did not restore gadgets or difficulty levels, and the developers warned it might not work if the save was not on the same computer. Roboquest’s announcement explains the limits.

Coral Island: incompatible saves with selected carryover
Stairway Games said Early Access saves would not be compatible with version 1.0. Players could bring gold earned in Early Access into New Game Plus, and reclaim purchased cosmetic charity DLC. The developer warned that starting a new 1.0 save and overwriting the old save would prevent the gold import. See the Coral Island 1.0 FAQ for its instructions.

How to check whether your progress will carry over
- Find the game’s official update information. Check its Steam news, Community Hub announcements, and official FAQ. Search for “save carry over,” “save reset,” “wipe,” “New Game Plus,” and “1.0.”
- Separate full save compatibility from partial transfers. Confirm whether the developer means your old save will load, or only that certain currency, unlocks, cosmetics, or DLC will be available.
- Read the procedure and timing before starting the released version. Check whether importing requires a particular menu option, version, branch, or old save. A new save may overwrite the one needed for an import.
- Preserve any save the instructions depend on. If the process relies on a local Early Access save or the same computer, keep it available and follow the developer’s stated process. A backup is prudent when instructed, but it cannot make an incompatible save work.
- If there is no clear statement, treat the outcome as unknown. Do not infer a reset or a carryover from the Early Access label or the arrival of version 1.0; wait for the developer to clarify.
