If your energy supplier changes ownership, your account does not automatically close, your tariff does not automatically change, and you are not necessarily moved to a new supplier. What happens depends on whether the supplier continues trading, stops trading, or enters administration. Read the notice carefully and confirm any account or contract changes directly with the supplier named in it.

First, identify what kind of change has happened

“Supplier changes ownership” can describe different events. An acquisition may leave the licensed supplier trading, while a supplier failure or formal transfer can involve a different supplier taking responsibility for customers. Administration is another distinct process. The notice you received—not the fact that a familiar brand or owner has changed—is the best starting point for determining which applies.

Situation What happens to supply and the account What to look for
Ownership changes while the supplier continues trading The sources do not establish a universal account or contract outcome for every acquisition. Check the notice and your contract rather than assuming your account has closed or your tariff has changed. Whether the same legal supplier is still supplying your premises, and whether the notice says your account, tariff, payment arrangements, or contact details will change.
Supplier stops trading and Ofgem appoints a supplier of last resort Ofgem says household customers continue receiving energy and are moved through its supplier-of-last-resort process. The new supplier or, in some cases, the failed supplier’s administrator deals with balances and debts. Whether the notice says your supplier has ceased trading and identifies a new supplier. Ofgem’s household guidance for a supplier failure explains the process.
Administrator takes over the existing supplier under the Special Administration Regime The supplier continues operating and supply is not disrupted while the administrator considers options such as rescue, sale, or transferring customers. This is an exceptional process, not the default result of a takeover. Whether the notice refers to administration or the Special Administration Regime. Ofgem’s business guidance describes this scenario.

Will your account or tariff change after a takeover?

There is no single outcome established for every UK ownership transaction. A change in the company that owns a supplier does not, by itself, prove that your account has closed, that you have a new contract, or that your tariff has changed. The terms depend on the transaction and your customer contract. Check the notice and the contract for any stated changes, and ask the supplier to confirm unclear points in writing.

Branding can also differ from the identity of the licensed supplier. In Ofgem’s 2018 Spark Energy and OVO example, OVO acquired the Spark brand and operating company; separately, after Spark Energy Supply Ltd ceased being a supplier, Ofgem appointed OVO to take on its customers. Under that arrangement, customers continued to be billed by Spark and contacted by Spark customer-service staff, while their energy was supplied under OVO’s licence. That specific arrangement should not be treated as a rule for other acquisitions. Ofgem’s Spark Energy customer guidance describes the case.

What to check in the supplier’s notice

Use the notice and your existing contract to establish who is responsible for your account and whether anything is changing. If any detail is unclear, contact the supplier through a verified channel and request written confirmation.

  • Supplier identity: Check the legal supplier name and whether that supplier is still supplying your premises.
  • Account access: Look for your account number, any new login instructions, and whether you can still access your existing account.
  • Contract and tariff: Ask whether your tariff, contract end date, or other terms are changing, and where any change is set out.
  • Payments and balance: Confirm whether your payment mandate or payment instructions are changing, and how any credit, debit, or outstanding balance will be handled.
  • Customer service: Note the contact details in the notice and verify them before sharing account or payment information.

Taking and keeping a meter reading can also help preserve a record if you expect to lose access to old account information. Ofgem presents this advice in its supplier-failure guidance; it is a sensible recordkeeping step if access is changing, not a stated requirement whenever ownership changes.

Do you need to switch energy supplier?

Not merely because the owner has changed. Whether you want to switch is a separate decision from the ownership change. Check your contract and the applicable switching rules before leaving. Ofgem advises business customers to check notice requirements, exit fees, and switching windows; household customers can compare suppliers and switch using Ofgem’s household switching guidance.

If you are a business customer, review the contract’s notice period, any exit fee, and when a switch is allowed before arranging one. These terms can affect when you can leave and what it may cost.
