The result depends on which part of the service failed: the dashboard, API, scheduler, GPU instance, network, storage, or an upstream dependency. A console outage does not automatically mean your training job has stopped—but neither does a working GPU prove that its data and outputs are safe.
What can fail during a GPU cloud outage?
GPU cloud services rely on multiple components, and an incident may affect one or several at once. A failed management service can make a provider’s console or API unavailable while some running instances continue. A compute, network, or storage failure can directly interrupt work or prevent access to the data it needs.
| Failure area | What you might notice | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Console or control plane | The dashboard will not load, or you cannot create, inspect, or manage instances. | It does not by itself show whether a running job has stopped. |
| API or scheduler | Requests fail or a job waits for a worker. | A queued job is not necessarily running, and an API error does not reveal the state of every existing instance. |
| GPU instance or worker | A running job loses its connection, stops making progress, or becomes unreachable. | A lost connection alone does not confirm whether the process or its latest outputs survived. |
| Network or interconnect | Workers cannot communicate, data access fails, or distributed training slows or stalls. | A healthy GPU does not guarantee that a multi-worker job can continue effectively. |
| Storage or an upstream dependency | Datasets, checkpoints, images, credentials, or other required services are unavailable. | Compute availability does not guarantee that a workload can read inputs or save results. |
Provider status information is most useful when you read it by component and region. A broad “operational” label may not answer whether a particular API, storage service, or customer account is affected.
Will your running AI job stop if the dashboard goes down?
Not necessarily. Runpod’s account of an AWS-region outage says its console and Pod provisioning or access were affected while existing Pod workloads remained operational. The provider also reported that an impacted worker-management microservice prevented workers from processing requests normally. Those details describe Runpod’s own service and incident; they are not a promise about another provider or a future outage.

“Pod workloads remained operational during the AWS outage, and even when the Runpod UI was unavailable, your Pods, endpoints, and clusters remained intact and secure.”
That is Runpod’s engineering team describing the incident, not an independent finding. Another provider may have different dependencies, and even within one service a control-plane failure can have different effects from a compute or storage failure.

CoreWeave’s status history records a global cloud-console incident on October 6, 2026, during which requests to the console returned 404 and dependent services including Grafana were affected. The provider marked the incident resolved at 7:22 PM UTC. That status entry does not establish that GPU compute was affected.
How to tell whether your workload and data are safe
Start by separating what you can observe from what you know. A failed API call, unreachable dashboard, or lost connection is a symptom—not confirmation that a job stopped, that its checkpoint is intact, or that outputs were saved.

- Check the incident by affected component and region, then compare it with your instance, job, and storage location.
- Look for the latest confirmed checkpoint or output through an independent route if one is available. Do not assume a dashboard outage has either erased or preserved the latest state.
- Review logs and job activity before retrying. A retry may duplicate work if the original process is still running.
- Confirm whether the provider’s status page gives a general service view or customer-specific information. Microsoft says its public Azure status page covers defined broad-impact scenarios; personalized Azure Service Health provides customer-specific incidents, maintenance, and advisories.
Keep the incident time, region, affected service, job IDs, error messages, relevant request logs, and last known checkpoint details. This record helps with recovery and may be needed if you later make an SLA claim.
How to recover an AI workload after an outage
- Establish the current state. Record when the problem began, which component and region appear affected, the job IDs and errors, and the last checkpoint you can verify. Preserve logs and request evidence.
- Check provider incident channels. Consult the component-level status history and any account-specific health or support notices. Determine whether the reported issue concerns capacity, control plane, compute, network, storage, or a dependency.
- Avoid destructive retries. Confirm whether a process is still active and whether its outputs or checkpoint are accessible before submitting duplicate work or deleting resources.
- Use an alternate environment only if it is ready. Confirm that the destination has the required GPU model, memory, interconnect, quota, and available capacity. Make sure data, credentials, container images, code, and dependencies can be accessed there.
- Reconcile after restart. Check for duplicate jobs and partial or conflicting outputs, then record the actual recovery time. If seeking a service credit, check the applicable SLA and its claim process and deadline.
These are practical recovery recommendations, not a tested procedure for every stack or a provider guarantee. For example, Lambda documents on-demand GPU virtual machines by geographic region, so a different region is not automatically an available substitute.

How to prepare for the next outage
Recoverability is something to build and test, rather than assume. A backup helps only if it remains accessible outside the failure domain you are trying to survive and can be used to restore the workload.
- Checkpoint work: Save recoverable training state and verify that you can read it after losing access to the original environment.
- Preserve deployment inputs: Keep code, container images, dependencies, model weights, configuration, and required credentials available through the recovery path.
- Map dependencies: Document where data, storage, identity, networking, DNS, and other required services live. A second GPU region may not help if it relies on the same unavailable storage or control plane.
- Validate alternate capacity: Check that another region or provider can supply the right GPU model, memory, interconnect, and quota. Do not assume capacity is immediately available or hardware is interchangeable.
- Test a restore: Practice resuming a representative job from a checkpoint in the alternate environment, and measure whether recovery meets the workload’s needs.
- Set a recovery objective: Decide how long the workload can wait and what duplicate compute, data-transfer, and storage costs are acceptable.
- Keep evidence and communications accessible: Know where to find incident history, customer-specific notices, logs, support channels, and SLA deadlines.
Runpod says that after the incident it deployed core services across multiple AWS regions within 72 hours and enabled workers to use cached configurations during some control-plane disruptions. Those are the provider’s descriptions of its response, not a guarantee of future availability.

What an SLA can—and cannot—do
An SLA may provide a service credit if an incident meets the agreement’s definitions and claim requirements. It does not restart a training run, restore a checkpoint, supply replacement GPUs, or make an alternate region available. The agreement for your exact service and account controls; availability definitions, exclusions, evidence requirements, and remedies differ.
| Provider document | What it says | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| AWS EC2 SLA | Defines region-level unavailability using running instances across two or more Availability Zones in the same region, or the stated cross-region condition for a single-AZ region. A claim must include dates and times, the affected region, resource IDs, and request logs, and arrive by the end of the second billing cycle after the incident. | Credits are the remedy described, subject to the agreement’s terms and exclusions; preserve the specified evidence and check the applicable claim window. |
| NVIDIA Cloud Services SLA | For covered offerings, service availability is calculated monthly and tracked every 15 minutes; capacity availability is tracked hourly. The document lists a 99% service availability target for specified offerings such as Omniverse Cloud, NVIDIA Cloud Functions, and Attestation Service. For NVIDIA DGX Cloud, it lists a 99% service availability target and a 95% capacity availability target. | These are offering-specific contractual targets, not an industry-wide GPU-cloud uptime statistic. Claims for covered offerings must be received within two months, and exclusions apply. |
Read the terms for the service you actually use: a target or remedy for one offering does not automatically apply to another.
How to compare outage resilience between providers
Compare the recovery path, not just a headline uptime figure. Ask whether the backup arrangement is independent enough to remain useful during the failure you are concerned about.
Quick Recap
- Failure-domain independence: Does the alternative rely on the same control plane, identity system, network, storage, DNS, or upstream provider?
- Running-job access: Can an active workload continue if the console or scheduler is unavailable, and can you reach it through another supported channel?
- Recovery capacity: Is suitable GPU hardware and quota practically available where you would restore?
- Data and environment portability: Can you recover checkpoints, datasets, model weights, images, code, dependencies, and secrets?
- Recovery time and cost: Can you restore within your operational needs, and can you absorb duplicate compute, transfer, and storage costs?
- Incident evidence and communication: Can you access component status, customer-specific notices, incident history, logs, and claim deadlines?
