When a beta ends, access can stop, progress may reset, and local app data may be lost or become inaccessible. Feedback and personal information already sent to the provider or platform are separate: uninstalling the app does not necessarily delete them. The beta agreement and privacy policy determine what happens in each case.
What happens when beta access ends?
A beta invitation usually grants limited testing access, not a promise that you can keep using the software. The provider may end access, change the beta, or close its online services. For example, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s US beta terms permit it to modify or terminate beta products and services; Cority’s agreement says access ends upon termination unless the tester has purchased a license by then. Read the end-of-test notice and the agreement for your beta to find the effective date, whether access can end early, and whether you need to take any action. Do not assume you will have a grace period or continued access after the test closes.
Which data may be affected?
“Beta data” can refer to different things, and each may have a different outcome. In particular, distinguish files on your device from information you submitted and records held by the provider.

Local data on your device
Apple’s TestFlight terms warn that deleting a beta app deletes data generated within it and may also delete data from a previously installed full version. Apple recommends backing up app data before deleting the beta or purchasing the full app. The exact backup options depend on the app and device. Apple TestFlight Terms and Conditions.
Feedback and information already submitted
Apple says deleting a TestFlight app does not delete testing data or beta input already provided to Apple or the application provider. Its terms direct users who want personal information deleted to contact Apple or the provider. Contacting them is distinct from uninstalling, and the applicable privacy policy may explain what information is held and how to submit a request. Apple TestFlight Terms and Conditions.

Apple’s Developer Program agreement also limits how providers may use TestFlight beta analytics and related feedback under that agreement, including restrictions on third-party sharing. Those provider obligations do not mean that analytics or submitted feedback are automatically erased when you remove the app. Apple Developer Program License Agreement.
Provider-held test data
Storage and deletion rules vary. Cority’s agreement, for example, says it will delete beta tester data stored using its beta software after termination if the tester has not purchased a license. Will beta progress, purchases, or content carry over?
Do not count on it. PlayStation’s US beta terms say digital content and progression or unlocks gained during participation will not be retained or available in the general release. A separate Steam game testing agreement allows game data to reset when a testing phase ends. These examples show why the specific game or app terms matter; they do not establish a rule for every beta. PlayStation beta terms; Steam Subscriber Agreement.
Before investing time or money in beta-only content, check whether the terms say that progress, virtual currency, items, or unlocks transfer to the public version. Treat test progress as temporary unless the provider explicitly says otherwise.

What to do before the beta ends
- Read the end notice and governing terms. Check the beta agreement, privacy policy, and any account notice for the closure date, access changes, retention rules, and required cleanup.
- Back up local data you want to keep. Use an option compatible with your device and app. A backup may protect local files, but it does not preserve beta access or guarantee recovery of server-side records. Apple specifically recommends a backup before deleting a TestFlight beta or moving to the full app. Apple TestFlight Terms and Conditions.
- Check before switching versions or opting out. Confirm whether installing the production version or leaving the beta could overwrite, remove, or make local data inaccessible.
- Handle closed-test materials according to the agreement. Some terms require testers to stop using beta features and delete beta software or saved non-public materials when testing ends. Save only records you are permitted to retain. Hypershell Beta Testing Agreement; Cority Beta Test Agreement.
- Make a separate deletion request if needed. If you want personal information already submitted to be deleted, contact the provider or platform and follow its process; uninstalling the app alone does not submit that request. Apple TestFlight Terms and Conditions.
How to compare beta programs
When deciding whether to join a beta—or what to do before one closes—look for answers to these questions in its terms and notices:
- When does access end, and can the provider terminate it without notice?
- Which information stays on your device, and which is sent to or stored by the provider or platform?
- Are feedback and analytics covered by separate use, retention, or deletion terms?
- Do progress, purchases, and beta-only content transfer to the public release?
- Must testers uninstall the software or delete confidential materials after the test?
The cited terms illustrate different answers across Apple TestFlight, PlayStation, Steam, Cority, and Hypershell. They do not settle rules for every beta, country, or privacy regime. Your own agreement, privacy policy, device, and location determine the applicable details.
