Changing phones and switching messaging apps affect two separate things: your saved conversation history and RCS service on your phone number. A backup or sync may bring messages to a new device, while RCS may still need to be verified or activated again. Switching apps is different from moving phones: Google says existing SMS/MMS messages remain when you switch to Google Messages, but that is not a guarantee that every app-specific RCS feature or message will carry over.
Will my RCS messages transfer to my new phone?
It depends on the platforms involved and whether the relevant backup or sync was enabled. RCS registration is separate: even if your history appears, the new phone may still need to verify your number or reconnect to RCS.

Moving from Android to Android
Check backup before retiring the old phone
Confirm Android device backup is enabled and review its details. Google’s documentation includes RCS messages when you use Google Messages. Restore during new-phone setup or after a factory reset. Google says a full restoration can take up to 24 hours. Google One is an optional way to get more backup storage; it is not an RCS requirement.

If history is missing or RCS will not connect
- Check whether device restore has finished and whether the expected conversations appear; Google says restoration may take up to 24 hours.
- In Google Messages, check RCS status in settings. If it shows “Connecting,” Google says number verification is in progress; complete any verification prompt.
- If history is present but RCS is not working, handle activation as a separate issue. A restored conversation does not prove that the new phone has registered for RCS.
Do I lose chats if I switch texting apps on Android?
Google says you will not lose existing SMS/MMS messages when you make Google Messages the default app. It does not promise that every app-specific RCS message, feature, or database from any former app transfers. Features that are proprietary or use non-interoperable messaging forms may no longer be available after switching.
RCS also depends on a supported device, carrier, and country or region. If you are troubleshooting a connection problem, Google advises setting Google Messages as the default messaging app. See Google’s RCS chats FAQ.

Moving between Apple devices
Use Messages in iCloud for message history
Apple says Messages in iCloud keeps message history up to date across devices signed into the same Apple Account when the feature is enabled. Its listed history types include SMS, MMS, RCS, and iMessage, including on a newly set-up device. The feature uses iCloud storage, and deleting a message can sync that deletion to other devices where it is enabled.
Text Message Forwarding is a different feature
Apple also documents Text Message Forwarding, which can show SMS, MMS, and RCS messages on other Apple devices without Messages in iCloud. Availability may vary by region and carrier. Forwarding lets devices continue to receive messages; it is not evidence that conversation history migrates to Android.

Moving between Android and iPhone
Do not assume an entire RCS history will move between Android and iPhone. Google’s cited backup guidance covers Android restoration, while Apple’s iCloud guidance covers Apple-device syncing; neither establishes a general cross-platform history transfer guarantee. The fact that current messages can use RCS between platforms does not establish that older conversations move between their backup systems.
After setting up the new phone, check whether its platform and carrier support RCS. Apple says iPhone RCS requires iOS 18 or later and a carrier plan that supports the service. The RCS setting may not appear if it is unavailable, and activation can take a few hours. Google also notes that RCS availability varies by carrier and country or region. Why did RCS stop working after I changed phones?
RCS is a service tied to device, carrier, region, and phone-number registration—not simply a feature of the saved conversation history. A phone change can prompt a fresh verification or registration. If the new device or carrier configuration does not support RCS, messaging may fall back to SMS/MMS or indicate that RCS is unavailable. Apple describes RCS as carrier-provided and requires a compatible iOS version and carrier plan for iPhone; Google likewise identifies carrier and regional variation.

On iPhone, green bubbles can represent either RCS or SMS/MMS; blue bubbles indicate iMessage. Color alone does not identify which kind of message a green conversation uses. Check the message field or details where iOS identifies the type.

How to reconnect RCS if the old phone is unavailable
If you still have the old phone
- On the old phone, turn RCS off.
- On the new phone, turn RCS on and complete number verification if prompted.
Google recommends this off-then-on sequence when switching phones. Its deactivation guidance says that if RCS is not turned back on within 30 days, you will be removed from all RCS group chats. See Google’s RCS deactivation and number-verification guidance.
If the old phone is lost, unavailable, or stolen
Google says you can remotely deactivate RCS by entering and verifying your phone number through its deactivation page. Then set up RCS on the new phone if the device and carrier support it. The 30-day group-chat consequence applies if RCS is not turned back on within that period.
Does RCS remain encrypted after a phone or app change?
Do not assume every RCS conversation is end-to-end encrypted. Google’s FAQ says cross-platform RCS conversations with iPhone users in Google Messages are not end-to-end encrypted. Apple’s support page dated May 11, 2026 says end-to-end encrypted RCS is in beta from iOS 26.5 with supported carriers and rolling out over time; encryption for a conversation depends on all participants’ carriers supporting it. These statements describe different platform and rollout conditions. Check the conversation’s encryption indicator and current device, carrier, and software support rather than inferring encryption from RCS alone.
