You do not automatically lose your Kindle books. Amazon says books already downloaded to the specified legacy devices remain readable after support ended on May 20, 2026. Those devices can no longer purchase, borrow, or download more books, and an affected device cannot be registered again after it is deregistered or factory-reset. Your account library remains available through supported Kindles and Kindle apps.
What Amazon’s support cutoff means for your Kindle books
Amazon’s May 20, 2026 cutoff applies to specified Kindle and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 or earlier—not every older Kindle. It limits what those devices can do; Amazon’s notice does not say that books are deleted from your account.
| Where the book is | What happens after the cutoff |
|---|---|
| Already downloaded to an affected device | Amazon says it remains readable on that device. |
| In your Amazon Kindle library | You can access the library through another supported Kindle or Kindle app by signing in to the Amazon account that holds the books. |
| Not yet downloaded to an affected device | The device cannot download it after the cutoff; it also cannot purchase or borrow additional books. |
Amazon also says an affected device cannot be registered again after deregistration or a factory reset. If you rely on its local books, keep it registered and avoid those actions.
Which Kindle devices are affected?
Amazon’s notice names these e-readers: Kindle 1st and 2nd Generation, Kindle DX and DX Graphite, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle 4, Kindle 5, Kindle Touch, and Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation. It also includes older Kindle Fire devices. The cutoff is not a blanket end of support for every Kindle released before a particular year: use Amazon’s named models to determine whether your device is covered.

Ways to keep reading your library
Use another Kindle or the Kindle app
Sign in with the Amazon account associated with your purchases, then open your Kindle library on a supported Kindle or Kindle app. Amazon’s Kindle library guidance explains access across devices and apps. A replacement e-reader is optional; the Kindle app and Kindle for Web are alternatives.
Check computer compatibility
Amazon says the Legacy Kindle desktop app, previously called Kindle for PC, has not been supported since June 30, 2026. Its current desktop app supports Windows 11 and macOS 10.14 or later; Amazon points people using unsupported operating systems to Kindle for Web. Check Amazon’s desktop app requirements for current compatibility details.

Understand what sync does
Amazon says sync backs up and saves data such as reading position, notes, and highlights from Kindle devices and apps to its servers. This can help carry reading progress between supported devices when sync is enabled and the device connects to the internet. Sync is not a substitute for downloading a book to a device you intend to use offline. See Amazon’s sync settings guidance.

Not every Kindle purchase can be exported as a standalone file. Since January 20, 2026, verified purchasers can download eligible DRM-free titles as EPUB or PDF when the publisher has enabled the option. Borrowed books are excluded. Amazon’s DRM guidance describes the eligibility conditions; check the specific title rather than assuming this applies to your library.

Rank #3
- Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
Amazon documents USB transfers for files, but that guidance does not establish that every purchased, DRM-protected Kindle book can be exported or transferred to an affected device after Store support ends. USB transfer is therefore not a universal workaround for the cutoff. See Amazon’s USB transfer instructions.

What to do before continuing to use an affected Kindle
- Keep it registered. Do not deregister or factory-reset it if you depend on its existing downloaded books; Amazon says it cannot be registered again afterward.
- Keep downloaded books on the device. Amazon says those local copies remain readable, so avoid removing them if you need access on that Kindle.
- Use your Amazon account library elsewhere. Sign in on a supported Kindle or Kindle app to access books associated with the account.
- Check app requirements before choosing a computer. Amazon’s Legacy Kindle desktop app support ended June 30, 2026; use a supported current app or Kindle for Web as appropriate.
- Check individual title download options. EPUB/PDF downloads require an eligible DRM-free title and publisher enablement, and are unavailable for borrowed books.
