Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIt depends on your messaging app and whether the fallback is group MMS or individual SMS messages. In Google Messages, Google warns that turning RCS off and on removes you from group chats. On iPhone, Messages selects RCS, SMS, or MMS based on your settings, network connection, and carrier plan; Apple does not guarantee that changing the RCS setting will preserve every existing group thread unchanged.
First, distinguish switching RCS off from a temporary connection drop
“Switching to SMS” can mean deliberately disabling RCS, briefly losing an RCS connection, or sending a particular message using a fallback format. Those situations do not have the same result. A fallback message does not necessarily mean you have changed a group’s settings or left its conversation.
SMS and MMS are also different. A group MMS can keep replies in a shared conversation, while group SMS—called “mass text” in Google Messages—can send replies individually. The outcome depends on the app, device, settings, carrier, region, and the RCS availability of participants.
What happens in Google Messages
Turning RCS chats off and back on
Google’s guidance is explicit: “It’s not advised to turn RCS chats on and off. If you do, you’ll be removed from group chats.” That is the clearest documented warning for someone deliberately switching off RCS in Google Messages. Google does not promise that turning RCS back on will automatically put you back into each previous group.

Google Messages lets you choose how group messages work. With an MMS reply to all recipients, the conversation remains a group exchange. With mass text, replies arrive as individual conversations. Check the app’s Group messaging setting rather than assuming every SMS fallback behaves the same way. Google’s RCS guidance and its group conversation guidance explain these options.
When RCS drops temporarily
A temporary loss of RCS is not the same as switching it off. Google says group messages can split into individual one-to-one conversations when a member temporarily loses RCS connectivity; the group usually restores when that sender reconnects to RCS. This is a connectivity behavior, not a guarantee that intentionally disabling RCS preserves the group. See Google’s troubleshooting guidance.

Group membership depends on the format
Google says users can be removed from RCS conversations, but users cannot be removed from SMS or MMS groups. If a contact who does not have RCS is added, Google Messages creates an MMS chat. These distinctions matter when diagnosing whether a group has changed membership or simply moved to another message format.
What happens in iPhone Messages
On iPhone, Messages chooses the message type automatically according to settings, network connection, and carrier plan. RCS is available on iPhone with iOS 18 when a supporting carrier plan offers it. The setting is at Settings > Apps > Messages > RCS Messaging. Apple’s documentation does not promise that disabling RCS converts every existing RCS group thread into an identical SMS or MMS thread.

Apple describes group MMS as a shared group conversation: it supports photos and videos, and everyone can see responses. Group SMS works differently: it does not support multimedia attachments, and replies are sent individually, so recipients cannot see everyone else’s responses. Carrier and regional support affect availability. For current details, consult Apple’s pages on sending group texts on iPhone or iPad and the differences between iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS.
A green bubble does not tell you that a message is specifically SMS: Apple says RCS and SMS/MMS messages all appear green. Check the available message information and your carrier’s support rather than treating bubble color as proof of the protocol.

What you may lose when a group falls back from RCS
Apple lists high-resolution photos and videos, delivery and read receipts, and typing indicators among group RCS capabilities. SMS/MMS does not provide the same documented RCS feature set. Exactly which features are available can depend on the messaging app and carrier, so a fallback should not be assumed to preserve RCS behavior.
SMS and MMS are not end-to-end encrypted, according to Apple. Do not treat an SMS/MMS fallback as having the same encryption protections as an RCS conversation.

What to check before changing the setting
- Identify what changed: distinguish a deliberate RCS toggle from a brief loss of connection or one message sent using a fallback format.
- Check the group format: in Google Messages, review Group messaging to see whether it uses MMS replies to all recipients or mass-text SMS with individual replies.
- Confirm support: verify that your carrier and region support RCS and group MMS on your device. On iPhone, RCS requires iOS 18 and a supporting carrier plan where offered.
- Look at message details: use the app’s available send or compose indicators; do not rely on an iPhone green bubble alone to distinguish RCS from SMS/MMS.
- Protect an important Google Messages group: avoid toggling RCS casually, because Google warns that turning it off and on removes you from group chats.
