If your Android phone is lost or stolen, use Google Find Hub from another device to locate it, lock it, or erase it. Google says a locked phone cannot make in-store purchases; erasing removes payment information from the phone. If the phone is offline, it may still be possible to see its last or network-assisted location, but a remote lock or erase cannot be assumed to have taken effect. Google Wallet tap-to-pay may work offline for a limited time, but Google does not state a universal transaction limit.
What to do first if your phone is missing
Use a separate Android device or a browser to open Google Find Hub, sign in to the Google Account used on the missing phone, and select that phone. Choose the available option to secure it or erase it. Google’s Find Hub instructions describe the remote actions and their requirements.
- Try to locate it. Find Hub may show a location if one is available. If you believe the phone is nearby, its sound option may help you find it.
- Secure it if you may recover it. Marking or locking the phone helps protect it while preserving the possibility of recovery.
- Erase it if protecting the data takes priority. Erasure removes the device’s data and payment information, but is destructive and removes the phone from Find Hub.
If you suspect someone also has access to your Google Account, review its security activity and devices and follow Google’s account-recovery guidance at Google Account Help. Contact your card issuer about any suspected unauthorized card activity. Google says suspected unauthorized payment activity should be reported within 120 days of the transaction date; see Google Wallet’s payment-safety guidance.
Does a locked or stolen phone still work for tap-to-pay?
Google states: “When your device is locked, it can’t be used to make purchases in stores.” A remote lock therefore protects in-store payment use once the command reaches the phone. A phone that has been stolen but not yet locked is a different situation: do not assume the remote command has taken effect until the phone can receive it.

Locking and erasing are not the same. Locking secures the device while leaving open the possibility of locating or recovering it. Erasing removes device data and payment information, including credit and debit cards, and takes the device out of Find Hub. If the phone is recovered after an erase, Google says you need the Google Account password to use it again. There is a transit exception, but it does not make ordinary bank-card purchases available on a locked phone. Google Wallet can allow transit payments without screen-lock verification where supported; the option applies only to transit, and some transit systems do not support skipping verification. Can Find Hub locate, lock, or erase an offline phone?
Location and remote control are separate. With offline-finding settings enabled, Find Hub may show a location saved while the phone was online or may use the Find Hub network to help locate it. This does not mean a lock or erase command has reached the phone.
Google lists these conditions for remotely securing or erasing an Android phone: it must have power and mobile-data or Wi-Fi access, be signed in to a Google Account, have Find Hub enabled, and be visible on Google Play. If it is offline, wait for it to reconnect rather than treating a queued or attempted action as completed. Google explains the requirements in its Find Hub help.

Offline location features depend on settings and device support. Google documents that supported devices, including Pixel 8 series, may remain findable for several hours after power-off under the documented conditions, including Bluetooth and Location being enabled when the phone is switched off. It may work for a limited number of offline transactions, but the available guidance does not establish a fixed quota or guarantee that every card and phone will work offline. A Google Wallet Community Product Expert wrote on October 22, 2024 that tap-to-pay can make a “limited number of offline transactions” and that reconnecting refreshes the ability to transact. This is community guidance, not an official universal policy; device, card issuer, country, and payment-token state can affect the result. See the community answer.

Offline payment is not the same as a lost or locked phone: it concerns connectivity while the phone is available to its owner. Google’s official instructions say tap-to-pay requires NFC, a supported payment method, screen lock, and a supported device with the required security. Check Google’s tap-to-pay requirements. Carrying a physical payment method is a practical fallback if a terminal or phone cannot complete a mobile payment.
How to restore tap-to-pay on a replacement phone
Google says Wallet cards and passes should transfer when Wallet is moved to a new phone, but payment cards must be set up again for tap-to-pay. Follow the card’s setup prompts in Wallet and complete any issuer verification. A remote lock, remote wipe, or factory reset can also cause payment cards to be removed from Wallet. If the missing phone has a digital car key
Find Hub remote suspension or removal of a Google Wallet car key requires the phone to be on and connected to a network. Google notes that some vehicle models may allow the owner to remove a key while the phone is offline, but that process may not be immediate. Check the vehicle-specific instructions as well as Google Wallet’s digital car key guidance.
