What happens to claimed Monthly Games?
A Monthly Game you claim through PlayStation Plus is not a permanent purchase. You can play it while you have an active membership; when the membership expires, a previously downloaded Monthly Game becomes unavailable. Sony says access returns if you resubscribe. The game remains associated with your account, but claiming it does not remove the membership requirement. Does canceling PlayStation Plus end access right away?
No. Turning off auto-renewal prevents the next renewal, but your benefits continue until the end of the subscription period you already paid for. You lose access when that period ends, not when you cancel.
How Monthly Games differ from catalog games
Monthly Games are claimed for your library and require an active membership to play. The Extra Game Catalog and Premium Game Catalog and Classics Catalog are subscription catalogs, not permanent additions to your library. Catalog access requires the relevant plan, and the games offered can change. If a catalog title leaves PlayStation Plus, downloading it earlier does not preserve access; resubscribing later does not guarantee that a removed title will be playable through the catalog. What happens to purchases, add-ons, and other claimed content?
- Games bought outright, including discounted purchases: These are separate from Monthly Game access and are kept when you cancel.
- Redeemed packs and avatars: Sony says these are kept.
- DLC or add-ons bought for a catalog game: Owning the add-on does not grant access to the underlying catalog game. If your membership expires or the game leaves the service, the add-on may be unusable until you resubscribe or buy the game.

How to check why a game is unavailable
- Identify how you got it. Was it claimed as a Monthly Game, downloaded from a Game or Classics Catalog, or purchased directly?
- Check your membership status. Monthly Games require an active membership. Catalog games also require an active plan that includes the relevant catalog.
- For a catalog game, check whether it is still offered. If it has left the catalog, a current subscription alone will not restore catalog access.
- Check the underlying game for any add-on. Purchased DLC does not substitute for access to a catalog game.
How to regain access
If the game is a claimed Monthly Game, resubscribing restores access according to Sony, provided the title remains associated with your account. A membership voucher can provide membership time, but its duration and plan depend on the voucher and account; it does not turn subscription games into permanent purchases. Check Sony’s US PlayStation Plus voucher guide for redemption details. For a catalog title, first confirm that it is still available and that your plan includes its catalog. If it has left the service, you would need to purchase the game to play it, where available.
