Whether it can run from a charger alone, how it behaves when the battery is reinserted, and whether a battery swap interrupts calls depend on the exact model. Removing the battery does not by itself mean saved files are erased, but abrupt power loss can discard unsaved work. Check the phone’s own instructions, and do not remove a battery the manufacturer identifies as non-removable.
What happens when you remove the battery?
For an ordinary phone that relies on its internal battery, removing that battery cuts its operating power, so the phone shuts down or stops working. The exact shutdown and restart behavior after reinsertion varies by handset. Android’s ability to support batteryless products does not mean every Android phone is built to run without its battery.
Will removing the battery erase your data?
Battery removal alone is not evidence that saved files have been erased. However, if the phone loses power abruptly, unsaved work may be lost. For example, the Kyocera KY-51D guide warns that unsaved data may be lost if its supported battery swap is not completed within two minutes. That warning applies to this phone and procedure; it should not be assumed to describe every Android device.
Can an Android phone run with no battery if it is plugged in?
Some Android products are specifically designed to operate without an internal battery while connected to external power, such as an AC outlet or USB port. Android Open Source Project documentation describes this configuration: for Android 9 and later, documented defaults can report the battery as absent, with unknown status and 0% capacity, while the system continues running on external power. Product implementations may need kernel or Health HAL changes to report power and battery state accurately.

This describes a purpose-built configuration, not a guarantee that a typical phone will boot or keep running with its battery removed and a charger attached. Check documentation for the exact model rather than testing this assumption.
What do phone makers’ instructions say?
HMD 105 (2024)
HMD says the printed guide for a device identifies whether its battery is removable. For a removable battery, HMD instructs users to switch off the device and unplug the charger before removing covers or the battery. It says not to attempt removal on a device with a non-removable battery, and warns that metal across the battery contacts can cause a short circuit. See the HMD 105 (2024) user guide.

Google Pixel 4a (5G)
Google’s safety manual says, “Do not attempt to remove the battery.” It directs users to Google or an authorized service provider for replacement. Google warns that an unqualified replacement can damage the phone, and improper replacement or battery use can create fire, explosion, leakage, or other hazards. Kyocera KY-51D
The NTT DOCOMO guide documents a battery-swap procedure for this model. If the replacement is not completed within two minutes, the phone powers off and unsaved data may be lost. During the swap, data communication stops, and calls and emergency alerts are not received. These are model- and procedure-specific instructions, not general rules for Android phones. How to handle a battery removal or replacement safely
- Identify the phone’s exact make and model, then read its own battery instructions.
- If the battery is labeled non-removable, do not pry the phone open. Use the manufacturer’s recommended service route or an authorized provider.
- If the battery is user-removable, follow the manual’s sequence. For the HMD 105 (2024), for example, HMD says to switch off the device and unplug the charger first.
- Avoid bending, puncturing, crushing, or shorting battery contacts. Do not use a visibly damaged battery; seek model-specific service guidance.
- Back up important work before a planned repair or swap. A power interruption can affect unsaved work, and some models specify additional data or communication interruptions.
What to check for your particular phone
- Does the manufacturer call the battery removable or non-removable?
- Does the phone’s documentation explicitly say it can operate on external power without an internal battery?
- Does its battery procedure warn about unsaved data, a time limit, or interrupted calls and communications?
- Does the manufacturer require service by itself or an authorized provider?
Android behavior is not identical across all phones: platform documentation covers products configured for batteryless external-power use, while individual manuals define whether a specific handset permits removal and what happens during its procedure.
