It then begins checkout; if its mission and onboard propulsion require it, the spacecraft may maneuver into a different orbit. Some payloads are released directly from the launch vehicle, while some CubeSats travel first to the International Space Station (ISS) and deploy later.
How a satellite is carried during launch
Before liftoff, a spacecraft is attached to launch hardware designed to hold and protect it during the ride to space and to transfer the forces of launch. The specific interface depends on the spacecraft’s shape and the launch vehicle. CubeSats often ride in dispensers, while larger or differently shaped small spacecraft may need another separation system, such as a clamp-band or mission-specific hardware. NASA’s CubeSat Launch Initiative describes pairing payloads with launches suited to their mission, readiness date, planned orbit, and constraints.
A rocket may carry a primary spacecraft as well as secondary or rideshare payloads. The sequence must account for all of them; each satellite is not simply released as soon as the vehicle reaches space.
What happens during ascent and before release
As the vehicle climbs, rocket stages separate when their work is complete. The payload fairing, which protects spacecraft during the dense lower atmosphere, can also be jettisoned once it is no longer needed. These events are milestones in a mission’s flight plan, not signals that every satellite is immediately ready to deploy.

NASA’s 2025 TRACERS launch report listed Max Q and first- and second-stage separation among the flight milestones, and said payload deployment from the Falcon 9 second stage was expected about an hour after launch on that flight. That timing is specific to TRACERS’ mission sequence; other launches can follow different schedules.
How satellites are released
Direct release from the launch vehicle
Once the launch vehicle reaches the planned conditions, it separates the spacecraft or its dispenser from the vehicle. With CubeSats, a dispenser can open and use springs to push the spacecraft away. Other payload shapes and interfaces use other mechanisms. The vehicle and payload are designed so that the release happens in the intended sequence and the satellite clears the launch hardware.

Rideshare release after a primary spacecraft
Secondary payloads may wait until the primary spacecraft is safely separated. For NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) secondary CubeSats, NASA says deployment occurs after Orion separates from the upper stage and reaches a safe distance; spring mechanisms then eject the CubeSats from their dispensers. The SLS Block 1 Orion Stage Adapter can accommodate up to 17 CubeSats in a combination of 6U or 12U sizes, according to NASA’s SLS reference page. That is a capacity for this adapter and configuration, not a general limit for other rockets.
Deployment after delivery to the ISS
Some CubeSats do not deploy directly from the rocket. NASA explains that certain CubeSats are delivered to the ISS and later deployed by a crew member on a planned schedule. In that route, the rocket first delivers cargo to the station; the CubeSat’s release happens later and from a different location than a direct launch-vehicle deployment.

What the satellite does after separation
Checkout and commissioning
Separation means the satellite is free of its carrier; it does not mean the spacecraft is already operating normally. Operators check that it is stable, correctly oriented, able to communicate, and able to point its solar panels as needed. NASA’s ASCENT mission description identifies stable flight, attitude, antenna communications, and solar-panel pointing as post-deployment checkout considerations.
The exact checks and schedule vary by spacecraft. Until its operators establish that key systems are working, deployment should be understood as the start of early operations rather than proof that the satellite is ready for its mission.

Orbit changes, if needed
Some satellites can use onboard propulsion to change orbit after checkout; others do not have propulsion or do not need a maneuver. NASA’s ASCENT description includes planned orbit-raising and orbit-lowering maneuvers after initial checkout. This illustrates why release orbit and operational orbit are not always the same, but it is not a procedure every satellite follows.

The release point and timing depend on the target orbit, spacecraft readiness and interface, launch-vehicle sequence, and the order in which primary and secondary payloads must separate. A direct payload release, a delayed rideshare release, and a later ISS deployment are distinct routes. NASA’s CubeSat Launch Initiative notes that launches are matched to each mission’s planned orbit and constraints, which is why an hour-after-liftoff example from one flight cannot be applied to all satellites.
