Planets farther out can escape engulfment, but their orbits may widen as the star sheds mass, and the change in radiation can transform their environments. The star then leaves behind a white dwarf, which can still have planets and debris around it. The outcome depends on both the star’s mass and the planet’s orbit.
How a Sun-like star’s death affects its planets
A Sun-like star does not usually end in one sudden explosion. It changes over time, and each stage can affect orbiting worlds differently. NASA estimates that the Sun will become a red giant in about five billion years (NASA Science: Types).
- The star expands. As hydrogen in its core runs low, changes in the core and in the surrounding hydrogen-burning layers cause the star’s outer envelope to swell. It becomes a red giant.
- Close planets face engulfment. A planet inside the star’s expanded envelope can be heated, dragged through the star’s atmosphere, and altered or destroyed by the interaction. For our Solar System, NASA expects Mercury and Venus to be destroyed; Earth’s precise fate is uncertain.
- The star sheds its outer layers. The ejected gas leaves behind a hot, dense white dwarf. The Sun is expected to lose about half its mass in NASA’s broad future-system account (NASA Science: Chapter 6, “Aging Into Gianthood”).
- Surviving planets respond to the lost mass. With less stellar mass, the star’s gravitational pull weakens, so surviving planets can move into wider orbits. NASA’s account illustrates the outer planets settling at roughly twice their current distances. That is a broad projection, not a guarantee that every planet survives or ends up at a particular distance.
A wider orbit does not mean a planet stays unchanged or habitable. The system’s radiation environment changes dramatically as the star evolves, and a planet that avoids the red giant’s surface can still undergo major environmental changes.
Will the Sun swallow Earth?
It is possible, but not certain. NASA says Earth may be destroyed during the Sun’s red-giant phase, while noting that whether it survives intact is uncertain (NASA Science: Chapter 7, “Death and New Life”). The Sun’s expansion and its changing gravitational influence both matter, so it is too definite to say that Earth will certainly be swallowed—or that it will certainly survive.

Can planets survive around a white dwarf?
Yes. A white dwarf is not necessarily left alone: planets may remain in orbit, while smaller bodies can be disrupted and form dusty material. Close-in debris can be broken apart by the white dwarf’s gravity and accreted onto it (NASA Science: Chapter 7, “Death and New Life”).
WD 1856 b: a survivor with an unusual orbit
NASA reports that WD 1856 b, a Jupiter-sized planet about 80 light-years away, orbits the white dwarf WD 1856+534. Webb measured the planet’s temperature and detected atmospheric signatures, including small cloud particles and hydrocarbons, most likely methane. NASA’s 2026 report gives a temperature estimate of about 260°F (126°C) and says the planet’s heating most likely occurred between 3 and 5.5 billion years after its star became a white dwarf (NASA Science: Webb report on WD 1856 b).

The favored explanation in that report is that the planet stayed on a wide orbit while its star became a red giant, then migrated inward later. Other proposals have considered gravitational nudges from planets or stars in the system. The precise migration mechanism is unresolved; WD 1856 b is an observed example of a planet around a white dwarf, not evidence that most planets survive or follow the same path.

The red-giant-to-white-dwarf account applies to the Sun and other lower-mass stars, not all stars. A massive star can collapse and explode as a supernova, leaving a neutron star or black hole depending on its core. Planets around such a star face a different, more violent sequence, so their fates cannot be inferred from the Sun’s expected evolution (NASA Imagine the Universe!: Stellar lifecycles).

What determines a planet’s fate?
- The star’s initial mass: It shapes whether the star leaves a white dwarf or ends in a supernova and a more compact remnant.
- The planet’s distance: A close world may be engulfed during the giant phase; a more distant one may avoid the expanded envelope.
- How much mass the star loses: Mass loss weakens its gravitational hold and can widen the orbits of surviving planets.
- What happens afterward: Radiation, orbital migration, gravitational disruption, and accretion can continue to change the system after the star becomes a white dwarf.
