What happens to a game when its studio leaves a platform holder? It depends on who owns the game’s intellectual property, who holds publishing and platform rights, and who is responsible for running its online services. A studio may take its games with it, a platform holder may retain them, a new publisher may take over, or a game may be discontinued. The studio’s departure alone does not settle the question.
Does a studio take its games with it?
Not automatically. A game’s developer, intellectual-property owner, publisher, and service operator can be different parties. A studio leaving a platform holder does not, by itself, establish that it owns the games it made or can continue selling or supporting them.
Double Fine provides one documented example of ownership returning alongside independence. On July 6, 2026, the studio said it was independent again and that the outcome “returns ownership of our games to us.” That describes the terms announced for Double Fine; it is not a general rule for other studios.
In an update reported September 22, 2026, Xbox said Compulsion Games and Double Fine returned to management with their intellectual property, back catalogs, and runway funding. Xbox said Undead Labs transitioned on similar terms, with a new publisher for State of Decay 3. The same update described proposed departures that had not reached the same outcome: two proposed Ninja Theory agreements fell through and consultation on a proposed closure would begin, while consultation for Arkane remained underway. These examples show why a planned departure should not be treated as a completed transfer.

Can the platform holder keep the game or franchise?
Yes. A platform holder can retain a game or franchise even if the studio that created it closes or leaves. Sony’s October 29, 2024 announcement said it would close Firewalk Studios and permanently sunset Concord. The team’s status and the game’s fate were related in that announcement, but they are distinct decisions: the studio’s closure does not itself explain who owns every game made by a departing studio.
Acquisition also does not necessarily mean a game immediately becomes exclusive to the buyer’s platform. In its January 31, 2022 announcement, Sony described Bungie as an independent subsidiary able to self-publish and reach players across platforms. That was the announced arrangement at that time; it should not be read as a guarantee of later terms.

Can a publisher keep selling or supporting the game?
Possibly, but a publisher’s ability to continue is not the same as owning the game or having unrestricted access to every storefront. Publishing agreements, platform licenses, title approvals, and distribution arrangements can affect where a game may be released or sold. In its Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025, Take-Two Interactive said it must obtain licenses from competitors including Sony and Microsoft to develop and publish titles for their hardware platforms. That filing describes Take-Two’s stated requirements; it does not establish the terms of any particular game’s contract.
A new publisher can provide a route forward if the rights and arrangements support it. Xbox said Undead Labs transitioned with a new publisher for State of Decay 3, which was slated for day-one Game Pass release. That announcement is a specific example, not a promise that another publisher can take over any game or that any announced release plan remains unchanged.

Also distinguish a game’s store listing from access to a copy already purchased. Whether a game remains available for new sales, can still be downloaded by previous purchasers, or can be played depends on the platform and the game’s arrangements. Check the relevant store and the publisher’s or platform’s current notices rather than inferring availability from the studio’s corporate status.
Will the game still work if the studio closes?
That depends on what the game needs to run. Online multiplayer, servers, connected features, and access to user-created content may stop even when a campaign remains playable. A game that requires an online connection may become unplayable when its service ends.

Offline play can survive an online shutdown
PlayStation’s support notice for LittleBigPlanet 3 says its online services and access to other players’ creations are unavailable, while “Offline features such as the campaign will remain playable.” This is the stated status for that title, not a guarantee about other games.
Some games stop working altogether
PlayStation’s support notice says GUNS UP! would not be playable after its shutdown because the title requires online access. A server shutdown therefore does not have one universal effect: it may remove only connected features, or it may prevent the entire game from running.

Delisting and shutdown are different events
A game being removed from sale does not necessarily mean its servers have closed, and a server shutdown does not by itself say whether the game remains listed for purchase. For example, Bandai Namco said on September 1, 2022, that its agreement with Round8 had ended and it could no longer support Bless Unleashed. It announced server closure for November 30, 2022, and removal of purchases from Sony and Microsoft stores starting September 1, 2022. Those were separate changes with separate dates.

- Check who owns the game or its IP. Look for a statement from the studio, publisher, or platform holder, or a reliable rights record. Do not assume the developer owns a game because it made it.
- Identify the current publisher and service operator. The original publisher, a new publisher, the platform holder, or no active operator may be responsible. A studio’s departure does not identify who now handles support.
- Check sales and download access separately. Look at the relevant platform’s store listing and notices. New sales and access to a prior purchase are different questions, and platform arrangements can affect both.
- Find out what needs an online service. Check whether the campaign works offline, whether multiplayer is available, and whether connected features or user-created content depend on servers.
- Read the exact announcement. A studio closure, project cancellation, game delisting, and server shutdown describe different events. Confirm which one the company announced and when.
There is no established cross-industry figure for the share or number of games that remain available after their studio leaves a platform holder. The outcomes vary by game and by the agreements among the parties; announcements about individual titles do not support a general survival rate.
