There is no standard outcome: the publisher’s shutdown notice determines what happens to the app, your progress, and its content.
Will you still be able to play after the servers shut down?
Sometimes, but “end of service” does not necessarily mean the same thing across games. A publisher may terminate access entirely, convert some gameplay to an offline mode, or preserve selected material in a theater or gallery. An offline version may omit online-dependent features, events, or other parts of the original game.
For example, Square Enix’s KINGDOM HEARTS Union χ Dark Road end-of-service notice said Dark Road would remain playable offline, while Union χ would be available as a theater mode. That is a game-specific plan, not a promise that other gacha RPGs will receive an offline version.
What happens to your characters and account data?
Saved data may be lost, may not transfer to a replacement app, or may carry over only through a defined process. An offline version does not automatically preserve your live account, roster, or progress. Aniplex’s Alterna Vvelt: Blue Exorcist Another Story service-ending notice said pre-shutdown player data would not carry over to its offline version.

Read the notice for exactly what, if anything, transfers: account details, progress, characters, purchased items, or only selected save data. Check whether you must start a transfer before service ends.
Can reinstalling the app or changing phones affect access?
Yes. Continued access can depend on the app remaining installed, the device you use, and the publisher’s migration rules. In its Dark Road notice, Square Enix warned that player data would not transfer if the app was deleted and reinstalled or if the player changed devices. That warning is specific to that title, but it shows why an installed app or an account by itself is not a guarantee of future access.

Before uninstalling, replacing a phone, or resetting a device, check the game’s official instructions. Do not assume that a backup, app-store download, or login will restore access after shutdown.
What should you check in the shutdown notice?
- Dates and region: Find the final service date, confirm that the notice applies to your region, and note any earlier deadlines for currency sales, transfers, or app updates.
- Post-shutdown access: Look for a clear statement about continued offline play, a story or theater viewer, a gallery, or complete termination.
- Transfer details: Identify which data or purchases transfer, how to initiate the process, and the deadline. If the notice does not specify a category, treat it as unconfirmed.
- Content and features: Check whether the main story, events, characters, battles, and online-dependent functions will remain. “Offline version” does not necessarily mean the original game in full.
- Device and app requirements: Check whether you need a particular update, app installation, device, or account action—and whether deletion or device migration affects access.
What a specific transition plan can—and cannot—tell you
Bandai Namco’s September 26, 2026 announcement for SYNDUALITY Echo of Ada, an online game rather than a gacha RPG, scheduled the end of online service for after May 2027 and described an offline-exclusive version. The announcement said some saved data and certain purchased items could transfer, while some online-dependent functions would be removed. Its FAQ said the physical package could be played by applying offline-version update data using the applicable game disc. These are scheduled plans that could change, and they do not establish what a gacha publisher will do.

That example illustrates why details matter: a shutdown plan can specify what remains playable, what transfers, what is removed, and what access conditions apply. Only the official notice for the particular game establishes its supported outcome.

A physical copy, a retained app, a third-party server, or an unofficial workaround is not a universal guarantee of post-shutdown access. Treat only the publisher’s stated plan as confirmation of what it supports for that title.
