An automatic transfer switch (ATS) then connects the designated loads to emergency power. Once utility service returns, the system can transfer back and shut down the generators. The exact sequence, loads covered and length of backup depend on the facility’s design.
What happens when grid power fails?
- The utility supply is interrupted or becomes unsuitable. The facility’s controls detect the condition according to site-specific settings; there is no single universal trigger threshold established for all data centers.
- The UPS carries protected loads. Its batteries provide ride-through power while generators start. Schneider Electric’s data center electrical distribution guide describes about 15 minutes at full load as typical, but that is an example—not a guaranteed runtime for every installation. Schneider Electric’s distribution guide explains the UPS role.
- Standby generators start. In the standby arrangement described by the U.S. Department of Energy, the ATS signals the generator to start when grid power is unavailable. DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program summarizes this sequence.
- The load transfers to emergency power. Once the emergency source is available, the ATS and associated electrical equipment connect the loads the system is designed to serve. Timing and load coverage vary by installation.
- Utility power returns and the system recovers. DOE describes the ATS transferring power back to the grid and signaling the generator to stop. The actual return-to-normal sequence depends on the facility’s controls and electrical design.
The UPS, generator, ATS, switchgear and distribution equipment form a connected power path. Schneider Electric’s commissioning guidance emphasizes testing the equipment in sequence through failure, restart and stable operation: Data center project commissioning.
What determines how long backup power lasts?
UPS ride-through
Battery runtime depends on battery capacity, the protected load, system configuration and maintenance. The roughly 15-minute figure in Schneider Electric’s guide is a typical full-load example, not a standard that applies to every data center. The UPS is generally intended to bridge the interruption and generator startup, rather than establish a universal duration of battery-only operation.
Generator endurance and fuel
How long generators can operate depends on the facility and its fuel arrangements. Uptime Institute notes that running on emergency systems for hours or days is not common in most geographies and identifies fuel-supply dependencies as a concern. Its discussion does not establish a fixed endurance period for a particular site: Uptime Institute research and reports.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why do data centers respond differently?
- Load coverage: A site’s design determines which IT equipment and supporting systems, including cooling, are connected to backup power. The available sources do not establish a universal share of loads protected.
- Redundancy: Facilities use different levels of redundant power and cooling infrastructure. Uptime Institute’s tier framework sets criteria concerning maintenance, power, cooling and fault capabilities; a tier does not mean every facility reacts identically or that outages are impossible. See Uptime Institute’s tier system.
- Controls and transfer design: The equipment configuration, operating settings and recovery sequence determine how the transition happens. No universal generator start time, transfer time or grid-restoration criterion is established for all installations.
- Integrated operation: Equipment must work together during loss of utility service, transfer and recovery. Commissioning guidance from Schneider Electric describes testing sequenced failures and restarts across individual components and the integrated system.
Can backup power still fail?
Yes. A UPS, transfer switch, generator, control system or distribution component can fail, so backup power reduces risk but does not guarantee uninterrupted service. Uptime Institute’s 2025 report attributed 45% of impactful outages in that report to power. Among reported causes of IT service outages stemming from power-related issues, it listed UPS failures at 42%, transfer-switch failures at 36% and generator failures at 28%. These are report survey figures, not a prediction for any individual data center. See Uptime Institute’s 2025 report resources.
