A stablecoin transfer that has succeeded on a blockchain is generally final: the issuer cannot simply reverse it. What may happen next depends on whether the transfer is still pending, which network and token were used, and who controls the receiving address. A wrong-network transfer to your own compatible wallet may still be visible there; a transfer to an unsupported exchange deposit or someone else’s address may be unrecoverable.
First, check whether the transfer succeeded
Do not assume the funds are lost—or recoverable—based only on a wallet balance or exchange deposit screen. Find the transaction hash in the wallet or service that sent the stablecoins, then open it in a block explorer for the network used.
- Confirm the status. A pending transaction is not the same as a confirmed, successful transfer. The guidance below applies mainly to transfers shown as successful.
- Check the network. Verify which blockchain processed the transaction; it may not be the network you intended.
- Check the asset and destination. Confirm the token or contract shown in the transaction and compare the destination address with the address you meant to use.
The transaction hash is the key evidence to provide if you contact a wallet, exchange, or service. Do not send anyone your seed phrase or private key.
What can happen in each situation?
| Where the funds went | What may happen | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Your own self-custody wallet, on an unintended network | The transfer may have completed on the network actually selected. A compatible wallet may show the balance after you switch to that network, if it supports that exact stablecoin there. | Switch the wallet to the network shown by the transaction and check token support and transaction status. Do not assume the balance will appear in every wallet. |
| An exchange or other centralized service, on an unsupported network | The service may not credit the deposit. Recovery depends on its current supported networks, asset rules, and eligibility criteria; some cases may be permanently lost. | Contact the service through its official support channel and ask whether that specific deposit is eligible for recovery or crediting. |
| Someone else’s wallet address | A successful transfer is not ordinarily reversible. Getting funds back generally requires the recipient’s cooperation. | If you know the recipient, contact them and request a return. Do not expect the issuer or a blockchain help desk to reverse the transaction. |
| A smart contract | Recovery may depend on whether the contract has a function that can return or redirect the tokens. Such a function is not something to assume exists. | Identify the contract and seek help from its legitimate operator or official documentation. Ethereum.org notes that contract recovery options are rare. |
If it went to your own wallet on the wrong network
“Wrong network” does not always mean the tokens disappeared. The transaction may have delivered them to the address on the network you selected, while your wallet interface is displaying a different network. Circle’s USDC guidance recommends switching the wallet network and checking the transaction status. This applies specifically to USDC guidance; other stablecoins and wallet interfaces may behave differently.

Use the explorer to identify the exact network and token, then check whether the wallet supports that stablecoin on that network. If it does, select the network actually used and look for the token balance. A matching address alone is not enough to establish that the wallet supports the asset or can display it.
If it went to an exchange or service
Exchange deposit addresses are not a guarantee that every token transfer to them will be credited. A service may support a stablecoin on some networks but not others, and its recovery rules can depend on the asset, network, account, and evidence supplied.

Use the platform’s official support channel promptly. Provide the transaction hash, asset, network, destination address, and any account details the service requests. Support may be able to explain whether the transfer meets its recovery criteria, but contacting support does not guarantee recovery.
Coinbase is one example, not a rule for every exchange: its documentation says some unsupported assets and networks may qualify for a recovery tool, while other cases may be permanently lost. That tool has eligibility requirements and fees. Check Coinbase’s current instructions at How do I deposit funds? rather than assuming another platform follows the same process.

If it went to the wrong address or a contract
A confirmed transfer to an address controlled by someone else has no ordinary blockchain reversal mechanism. Circle’s guidance for USDC puts it plainly: “If you sent USDC to the wrong address, Circle can’t recover the funds.” That statement concerns USDC and Circle’s services; it should not be read as a policy covering every stablecoin or wallet.
If you recognize the recipient, ask them directly to return the funds. If the address belongs to an exchange or service, contact that organization through its official channel. Both approaches depend on cooperation or platform policy, not a guaranteed reversal.

For a contract address, the possibility of recovery depends on the contract’s design and access controls. Ethereum.org explains that an Ethereum transaction is irreversible and that recovery options involving contracts are rare. This is Ethereum-specific guidance, not a guarantee about every blockchain or contract. See Ethereum.org’s FAQ.

People who have just sent funds incorrectly are targets for unsolicited “recovery” offers. Treat a promise of guaranteed retrieval, especially one that asks for an upfront payment, as a serious warning sign.

Before sending stablecoins next time
Stablecoins with the same name can exist on multiple networks, and support can differ by wallet or exchange. Circle reported native USDC support on 38 blockchain networks as of September 16, 2026; that is a dated issuer statement, not a permanent count or a claim about other stablecoins. Check Circle’s current USDC information and, more importantly, verify the receiving service’s current deposit instructions.
Quick Recap
- Match the network selected for sending to the network specified by the recipient.
- Confirm the exact stablecoin and receiving address before approving the transfer.
- For an unfamiliar destination, consider whether the sending service allows a small test transfer, while accounting for any fees or minimum deposit rules.
- Save the transaction hash until the recipient confirms receipt.
