Unliking removes your active like from the post and can remove the related notification from Instagram’s Activity feed. But if Instagram already sent a push notification to the person’s phone, it may remain there. That does not tell you whether they saw it, and you cannot reliably make an already-delivered phone alert disappear.
What changes when you unlike the post?
Your like is no longer active on the post after you unlike it. Instagram may also remove the associated alert from its in-app Activity feed. Reporting that quotes Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri describes this distinction: Instagram can delete its own notification, but it cannot recall a phone notification after it has been sent. Preview.ph’s report and SPOT.ph’s report attribute that explanation to Mosseri.
In-app activity and phone alerts are different

The reports do not establish a guaranteed delivery outcome for every device or circumstance. Instagram’s push notification help information describes notification preferences for interactions and posts, but notification settings and delivery can vary.
Does the person know you liked the post?
There is no way to know from the like-and-unlike action alone. The person may have had push alerts turned off, missed the alert, or cleared it without reading it. Conversely, they could have noticed a phone alert before or after the like disappeared. The cited reports do not provide a reliable probability that someone saw it.

What to do after an accidental like
- Unlike the post if you do not want the like to remain active.
- Do not assume that doing it quickly prevents a phone notification; the available reporting does not establish a timing guarantee.
- Do not treat an alert as proof the person saw it. Once the like is removed, there is no reliable way to determine whether they noticed a push notification.
