After a crypto token launches, its project may make it usable, seek trading access, continue building the underlying technology, and try to attract users. There is no standard sequence—and launch alone guarantees none of those outcomes. A token may remain hard to trade, fail to gain adoption, or lose most or all of its value. Before making a decision, check what the token actually does, what rights it gives, where it can be traded, how it is held, and which rules apply where you live.
What does a token launch actually mean?
“Launch” can describe different events: a token is created, distributed, made available for use, or offered for trading. It does not by itself mean that a finished product exists, that a particular exchange has listed the token, or that buyers will be able to sell at a quoted price. A project’s announcement is not proof that its plans have been completed.
After launch, the project may keep developing its system and try to build usage. Whether the token gains a working purpose or an active market depends on the project, its technology, and whether people choose to use or trade it. The CFTC identifies adoption, future demand or uses, liquidity, technology changes, and theft among the factors that can affect a digital token. The CFTC’s consumer advisory also cautions that buying only in the hope of selling later at a higher price is speculation carrying considerable risk.
What might happen next?
These are possible developments, not a required timetable. One project may launch a usable feature before pursuing trading access; another may seek a market while parts of its product remain under development.

How can you assess the token and the project?
Read project documents as claims to verify, not as proof that the claims will come true. The SEC’s Investor Bulletin advises readers to find out how proceeds will be used and what rights a token provides. A 2025 response by SEC Commissioner Hester M. Peirce—not a binding Commission rule—lists disclosure topics that can help readers frame their questions, including offering terms, distribution and vesting, utility, supply and issuance, holder rights, and risks. Read the response.
- Function: What does the project say the token is for? Is that function available now, and can you verify it?
- Rights: What, if anything, does holding the token entitle you to do or receive? Do not assume it gives you equity, a share of profits, or a vote.
- Supply and distribution: What is the stated supply? Can it change? When can project, investor, or other allocations unlock?
- Use of proceeds and delivery: What does the project say funds will pay for? Are milestones and responsible people or entities identified?
- Risks and recourse: What does the project disclose about technical, operational, and other risks? If something goes wrong, what realistic route—if any—would a holder have to seek help or recovery?
These checks help distinguish what has happened from what is only planned. A functioning feature, for example, is different from a promise to build one, and neither on its own establishes that the token will gain a market or value.

Can you trade the token, and what does its price tell you?
A launch does not ensure that the token will be available on an exchange you can use, or that a market will have enough buyers and sellers for you to trade easily. Check whether trading is actually open on the venue named, whether that venue serves your region, and whether there is evidence of meaningful liquidity. A displayed price is not a promise that you can sell a meaningful amount at that price.
Token prices can be extremely volatile. The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority warns that early-stage projects may result in losing the whole stake and describes limited consumer protections in its ICO statement. Treat a planned listing, projected demand, or rising quoted price as uncertain rather than as evidence of a reliable exit. No general price path or post-launch survival rate can be inferred for an individual token.

Who controls the token, and what can go wrong?
With an exchange account or other third-party service, that provider holds or controls access to the assets on your behalf. With a self-controlled wallet, you are responsible for safeguarding the credentials that authorize access. Neither arrangement removes risk; the important difference is who controls access and what recovery options exist.
The SEC Investor Bulletin warns that exchanges and other services holding digital assets can be exposed to fraud, technical glitches, hacks, or malware, and that recovery after theft or fraud may be limited. Before choosing how to hold a token, understand who controls access, what recovery arrangements the provider offers, and what may happen if that provider fails. A project can also fail to deliver as expected, while technical problems, fraud, or theft can cause serious losses. These are risks to investigate—not grounds to assume every token or project is fraudulent.

Which laws apply after a launch?
Legal treatment depends on the token, how it is offered or sold, the circumstances, and the jurisdiction. A token’s name or label does not settle the question. In U.S. materials, the SEC explains that the analysis may concern the transaction and an investment contract, not just the digital asset in isolation. Its discussion of the Howey test refers to an investment of money in a common enterprise with a reasonable expectation of profits derived from the essential managerial efforts of others. The SEC also notes that a crypto asset that is not itself a security may be offered under an investment contract in circumstances where securities laws apply. See the SEC’s small-business guidance.

For the EU, the European Commission describes MiCA as a framework for issuing crypto-assets and providing related services within the regulation’s scope, with requirements addressing areas such as market integrity, operational and prudential matters, cyber risk, and anti-money-laundering controls.
