A woman was reported to have walked into the side of a driverless shuttle in Vienna in July 2019; reports do not say that the bus struck her. She suffered minor abrasions. Wiener Linien temporarily paused the shuttle trial, then resumed limited operation after reviewing the incident.
What happened in Vienna?
The incident took place at about 9:30 a.m. on July 18, 2019, on Ilse-Arlt-Straße near the Seestadt U2 station. ORF reported that eyewitnesses described a woman, about 30, wearing headphones and looking at her phone, as she made contact with the side of the shuttle. Those are reported eyewitness details, not an independent determination of how the incident occurred or who was at fault. ORF’s report described the contact as the woman walking into the bus.
The woman sustained minor abrasions, according to ORF. The shuttle was part of Wiener Linien’s autonomous-bus trial, and passenger operations were temporarily stopped while the operator examined the circumstances.
What did the operator say the shuttle did?
In a follow-up report, VIENNA.AT/APA relayed Wiener Linien’s account that the shuttle detected the woman as a potential obstacle, sounded a warning, and began braking when she continued. A Wiener Linien spokesperson said 1.6 seconds elapsed between detection and the stop, and that the vehicle was travelling at no more than 12 km/h. The follow-up report attributed these details to the operator; they are not a published independent accident-investigation finding.

After the pause, service resumed with one shuttle. The available accounts do not establish that an independent investigation cleared the vehicle, nor do they establish legal fault by the pedestrian.
What was the Vienna shuttle trial?
The incident occurred during auto.Bus-Seestadt, a research project that tested two small electric autonomous shuttles in passenger service near Seestadt station. Wiener Linien describes the route as roughly two kilometres. The vehicles used 2D and 3D LiDAR and satellite positioning; an onboard operator could take manual control to steer around persistent obstacles. Wiener Linien’s project page says the three-year project ended on June 30, 2021.

This was a trial on a specific route and under its own operating conditions. The incident and the operator’s account of the shuttle’s response do not, by themselves, establish how safe autonomous buses are generally or provide a collision-rate comparison.

The auto.Bus-Seestadt project described here is over; Wiener Linien’s project page gives June 30, 2021, as its end date. The shuttle trial should not be mistaken for a current Vienna bus route.
